Correct fitting of a fly plaid

    Hi Everyone.

I have recently purchased a fly plaid to wear at my wedding and I am not sure on the best way to fit it. I know its to go over my left shoulder and then the broach sits just on my left chest.

I am not to keen in putting the broach pin through my Charlie jacket and wonder if there is a better way to fit it?

Also, is there a way of folding the plaid to start with or do I just "grab a corner" and throw it over my shoulder?

Cheers - oh, and any pics of you wearing plaids would be great.

    Thanks
    Paul

Sorry, it won't stay in place without pinning it to the jacket.

Some plaids come with a corner prepared for the pin since your didn't you need to gather the corner so the brooch is going through more than on layer of the plaid. I end up with three layers

Put the corner through the epaulet to where you want the front corner to come. Now lift the front corner and gather the plaid into two pleats (one in each hand) . Fold them both to the middle put the corner down against the jacket (your folds will be against the jacket and hidden) then put the brooch trough those layers and the jacket to hold the plaid in place.

Chef has pretty much said it. You gather the corner, slip it through the epaulet, and pin it. To avoid putting as big a hole in the jacket, I just pin the brooch to the plaid, then use safety pins on the underside to attach the pin to the jacket. It does have to be attached to the jacket or it will slip out.

    cheers for the advise guys..

I also thought about using strong magnets to hold it in place - not sure if they will be string enough tho..

If the jacket is a good quality wool then the pin isn't a problem. I have had my Montrose for years and you can't see the where it gets pinned.

yeah, it is a good jacket - cost me a fair bit so thats why I don't wanna put a pin through it....

I guess I will just have to try the magnet thing and see what happens.

As Dave said, use a safety pin; it's usually a lot smaller than the brooch pin, and it's a lot easier to get a neat pleat and the brooch squared away (with mine it matters) and then pin it down. I put one in the shoulder too, under the epaulette just distal to the button, to keep it from bunching up outboard; I guess my shoulders stoop a bit.

I wear mine higher; even with the top of my shoulder, like you would with a full plaid. In the pic you can see why.

I dont have a good pic handy but when I wore mine for my wedding, I did not pin the brooch through the jacket (Rules of the rental company .. ).

Instead, I used the boutinneir (sp?) and pinned it through the plaid and to the jacket on the lapel. This worked extremely well! Without that though, I would have had to pin the brooch to the jacket .. it just would not have stayed in place.
