    fly plaid part II

    Greetings,

As a follow up yo my earlier post (http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...tartans-72032/), I am seeking advice on purchasing a fly plaid. The one I received is quite nice, however, the sett-size is just too different. Agree?

I would prefer to have a plaid made by the kilt-maker who made the kilt, however, that is not possible. She SAYS she made the kilt from Bruce MWS2025, but I am not sure I agree.

Is anyone or does anyone recommend a kilt-maker who can help?

    Thank you,
    Richard

It's a house of Edgar tartan

but it's hard to tell from the photo, but the easiest way to check would be to get an sample from them directly and then compare

Thanks for the ID help. Do you agree the plaid and kilt don't "go"?

No, I do not. They look fine. There is absolutely no need for the plaid and kilt to be of the same sett. Just look around for some pics of officers and men of the Atholl Highlanders.

    I agree.

Too much matchy matchy gives people tartan blindness. A different sized sett gives interest to the outfit.

Personally, I don't really see a problem. Close enough, don't worry about it.

    Re: fly plaid part II

Acording to Scotweb's tartan lists, if that is Bruce Modern tartan, there are two 16 oz versions from Batley and Lochcarron, and four 13 oz versions from House of Edgar (2 different ones?), Batley, and Lochcarron. Between the 13 oz and 16 oz weights I would expect a moderate difference in sett size, but there may also be significant sett size differences even in similar weight fabric. If the plaid was bought from the same vendor who sold you the tartan for the kilt, and they are supposed to be the same weight, I would be seriously scratching my head wondering what went wrong.

But as others have said, if the tartan colors match well, sett size differences are probably not worth losing sleep over. Although, I rarely (?never?) wear a simple fly plaid so I may not be the person you want to ask.

I think the pairing of your kilt and that fly plaid is just fine. I actually like the different sett size for contrast. Like others have said, it actually adds more interest to it.

I don't agree but perhaps for different reasons than the others. The way you are wearing your kilt is not exactly traditional so having slightly different sett size and even colours should not present a problem with this kind of outfit

You did mention wearing the plaid formally. I assume you mean with a doublet but plaids are VERY formal so unlikely to be worn much except at a white tie function. For these occasions you will still not attract attention as there is no "rule" to say the two setts must match exactly
