This evening I'm attending a talk on Pearl Harbor at the Marine Corps Historical Foundation (at the Museum at Quantico). Survivors of the attack will be on hand to talk about their experiences.

I never tire of reading accounts of the people involved. This being a significant milestone we had a good write-up in the news. Powerful stuff.

My father was stationed at Pearl at the time. He and my mother, my oldest sister, and my maternal grandmother were there, living off-base, and my mother tells stirring stories of seeing the first planes come in (and all the aftermath). My father never spoke of it that I recall, and Mother didn't really open up until the 50th anniversary was marked. Last year, before her health declined, she was able to spend a day at an elementary school sharing her experiences with the classes and families in a small town in Alaska (long story of how that came about!). Somewhat eerie to think that in 50 years or so, one of those youngsters will be saying "I met a survivor. . ."

Indeed...they are not forgotten.

I asked people around my office if they knew what today was, and I even gave them clues by reciting snippets of FDR's famous speech, and also the year, 1941. Even still, they had no clue. I was truly amazed by that, but as the formally trained educator, and life-long learner, I quickly educated them!

Because of a delay in transit on its way to Pearl, my father's ship was at sea on December 7th. Had they been on time he would have been in the thick of it. Lucky? His ship was eventually sunk at the battle of Savo Island; he survived (or I wouldn't be here). Five generations of sailors; I'm the forth, my son (currently serving) is the fifth. We don't, won't and can't forget!!!
