angora goathair sporran
I'm finally done with my angora goathair sporran project. Yesterday was Tartan Day in NYC and I was going down to participate. I had wanted to finish my sporran for the event but as the day appoached I hadn't even started the leather work. I had finished the brass cantle in october with the hope of completing the sporran soon after.... Well, 6 months later and one day before the nyc trip I sprang into action. In 8 hours I cut, stitched, riveted and assembled the sporran. I was not quite as careful with the fit and finish as would have liked but with the time limit was satisfied overall.
The next sporran will incorporate a similar cantle but with a plain leather pouch. It'll be alittle more appropriate for daywear situations. This one was fun and a practise for making a possible silver cantle dress sporran.
I did get alot of nice comments on it at the parade and one piper took a few photos of it.

I like it...a lot. Where did you get the cantle? Did you make it? would you sell one?

Fantastic sporran. From the photos it appears to me that you have used the the hair with hide attached for the front of your sporran. If this is the case, was it easy to source this product and if you dont mind, a ballpark figure as to the cost of the hide

I made the cantle in the fall (you can see it in a previous post "DIY brass cantle"). It's made from a thriftshop tray so I only have the other half and have plans to use it. If I come up with another source for one I'd consider making one.
The goat hide is from www.dawnscustomcarding.com/pelts.html out in Washington state and the full tanned hide was in the $200-$300 range (depending on size and hair color / length). Since the hide was very supple I decided to try to use it alone for the front. I was very careful to position the template to conserve the the hide and not have much waste. I'm saving the scrap pieces which can be dyed to make tassles.
The whole pouch is held on with six brass rivets in back and 5 brass screws in the front. The side brass hinge balls are threaded and removable so the pouch can be taken off intact. The new goat skin tends to shed some so at the end of the day I had to clean off the kilt front but it wasn't too bad.
This was a fun project and I learned quite a bit in the process. I may make a few more of these in the future if I can find the time!

Outstanding! The finished product looks very nice - in an understated and traditional way. I like the looks of a brass cantle over silver, and having it unadorned like yours is a perfect look!
It looks excellent, but the fact that you did it all yourself from scratch is the amazing part!

I'm impressed. It looks like a lucky find from an antique shop. Good job!

It's always hard to find exactly what you can imagine. I always liked the vintage brass sporrans and from what I've seen they come in all sort of shapes and designs. The simple design on mine was somewhat out of necessity but I do like a basic look. The brass ornaments add enough visual design for me.
