    Coach Conversion Sporran

Here it is folks. The birthday gift I gave myself.
I started with a Coach Model #6690 backpack/bag that I picked up at a thrift store. The cost to me was $30.00 US. Ebay listings for the same bag are as much as $100.00 plus before shipping. They are really good quality leather and constructed products.

I took a few photos as I disassembled the bag. This is the bag opened before I started.
I have removed the inner draw string/leather straps.
I removed the buckles from the back that held the shoulder straps and then removed the straps. I sewed this supporting strip back into place.
I then stripped the bag seams to remove the bottom of the bag.

There was 4 inches of height and 14 inches length of leather taken from the bottom. The original bag had a bottom that was 4 X 8 inches.
The new bottom (a former support for the back of the original bag) is 2 inches by 7 inches. I sewed the old piping back into place. NOTE: The bag has an inner pocket that has a zipper. This was a plus to my choosing this bag for a sporran.
Then began the construction. The processes have been described many times by other before me so I'll let the photos do most of the rest of this posting. Starting the bottom stitching. Before sewing the sides.
I must start another post to finish the photos.

At this point, I started sewing the sides to the back. I used a clear contact cement that held the sides in place while I used an awl to pierce holes in new leather. * I used the old stitching holes as guides to remain uniform with the original bag. I also used a heavy duty, 5 ply woven, cotton/poly thread to sew with. *
I used the old shoulder straps to create the belt. I attached the buckles to a short section that I sewed to the back of the sporran. I used the rest of the shoulder straps to make the waist belt. Here is the finished product hanging on my utility kilt. I removed the side pockets of the kilt and may use them a an inner liner to the sporran later. I kept the drawstrings (with the tassels) and it gives a Rob Roy touch to the sporran.
    Happy Birthday to me!
