I fixed my broken kilt belt

The metal hook on my kilt belt snapped and I could not find anywhere to buy a replacement.

So I cut a small section from the centre of the belt end and used a steel masonary nail cut to size.

This was several months ago and it seems to be just as good.

As long as the nail head is at the top it does not drop out but the nail is a tight fit anyway..

    Chris.

hope the breakage wasnt due to bacchanalian excess on your 6 week tour Chris. Very practical mend of the belt. Good thinking.

I bet that it honestly sits closer to the belt now and doesn't have that bulge you typically get from a buckle with that type of back. That's using your head!

No. I am still 36 inch waist and the belt is not needed to keep the kilt up. I just wear a belt with a polo shirt for casual. I do not wear a belt with a vest/waistcoat.

I would recommend getting a small file and rounding off the cut end, so it can't snag your apron when bending over, or anything else...

/machinist by training, and I abhor unbroken edges and un-filed burrs. I've bled quite enough on their account!

Re: I fixed my broken kilt belt

That's a pretty ingenious solution! And I'll bet it holds up a lot longer than the original clip did.

I really wish that someone (like one of our forum advertisers... hint hint) would buy a bunch of these clips in bulk and offer them for sale as replacements. It's really pretty stupid that everyone sells kilt buckles that require these clips, but no one sells the clips. They just assume that your kilt belt already has one.

I actually had to buy 1/8" steel rod and bend my own clip when my wife made my kilt belt.

Here's the only supplier I've managed to find:

    http://www.leprevo.co.uk/d%27s_o%27s_steel.htm

Scroll down to the very bottom of the page to find Kilt Loops. The minimum order is 10, so there is an opportunity for someone to order some and then (presumably for a mark-up to make it worthwhile) offer singles to the list.

I'm about to make myself a loop from brass rod, to match a brass buckle.

I haven't ordered from LeProvo, but I like the tone of their website.
    Cheers,
    John
