During the American Revolution 42nd BW Grenadier Companies did have a red stripe. Contact Malcom McWilliam of Muskets of the Crown. Before wearing anything uniform wise it is checked for authenticity. I did read some time ago the red stripe was placed on the Government sett around 1746. I'm trying to contact the Black Watch Appeal for more info.

It's probably one of those little things in history about which there's not enough evidence to be absolutely certain one way or the other.

With surviving contemporary relics there's always the question of provenance.

Contemporary illustrations are often poorly executed, and often drawn from second-hand information.

Contemorary written accounts are often open to question.

There are a couple clear well-executed watercolour portraits of BW members (obviously done from life by a skilled artist) c1780. I'll have to look and see if one of them shows a Genadier.

Very true Richard. A good book with lots of info that I've read John Peebles The Diary of a Scottish Grenadier during the American Revolution.
