doublebreasted jackets- again
The thread a while back on doublebreasted kilt jackets is now locked. But here's something I just ran across, the Alexander Brothers both wearing a type of jacket I can't remember seeing before

Compare it to the jacket worn by PM Evan MacRae c1981

Both end at the waist, the bottom hidden under a belt. Both have contrasting epaulettes.

Has the Alexander Brothers' picture been flopped? The jackets button up in what is usually called the "woman's way".

Curiouser and curiouser!
I can't quite tell, but is that some sort of Tashe at the back we are seeing under his left arm? Those two white blobs - are they buttons?

Never mind the jackets - I love "The waggle of the kilt"

I have just found this, from their official website:
http://www.alexanderbrothers.com/link.html

Now that looks like the same jacket to me, but buttoned the other way.

Re: doublebreasted jackets- again
I started a thread a little less than year ago about converting double-breasted tweed jacket I picked up in London last minute for a dressier dinner than I was expecting when I packed for the trip. Although a nice looking dark brown mixed fiber tweed the double breasted look and relatively poor build quality IMHO did not lend itself to a desirable conversion outcome, so although it has not been relegated to the consignment pile yet it is indeed headed that direction soon.
I think the examples shown above have a distinct cut and build that makes them look right with the kilt, where the low slung long deep lapels European cut of mine was ill-suited to achieve a similar attractive appearance. So obviously DB kilt jackets can be had that look good with the kilt, although it would likely have to be bespoke from an experienced tailor with highland experience----self designed so to speak, and one off unless you had a pattern or example at hand to work from.

That jacket is worn on several of their LP jacket covers, looking through ebay.
A white version of the jacket appears on itunes...

Re: doublebreasted jackets- again
As Forrester points out, the question is this: how high does the jacket button- or, for the limbo fans, how low? The same question applies to single breasted jackets, but I think the stakes are higher with a double breasted one. Some likely candidates for DB-as-kilt- jacket are various navy dress jackets, which tend to go higher than civilian ones, and variations on the chef's jacket, such as this one: http://folkwear.com/133.html
Like the closure on a kilt, a chef's jacket can be buttoned either way. Charles Thompson talks about doing chores with your kilt aprons reversed, so as to keep the proper one covered and clean. I have heard of chefs doing the same thing- when the front becomes dirty, you just button it up the other way. Somehow, I doubt that is what happened on the jackets above, but you never can tell.
I was looking at the Sportsman's guide for a DB dress blazer. They often will have one from some oversupplied military branch, but they do not seem to have a suitable one at the moment. They feature a greenish-grey one from the East German army that is too low in the gorge (imho) to survive a conversion. This one is listed as a jacket, not a dress jacket, but it might work, depending on how heavy it is:

Being polyester, it might not appeal to everyone, but it might make a good prototype to show your tailor.
Meanwhile and entirely OT, there are several other great jackets at The Guide, including this personal favorite, ready to go :
