I see kilted Japanese people... (photos)

October 5 was the date of the Japan Highland Games... I took an entire contingent from my city -- the 6 of us had a fantastic time, listening to bagpipes all day and watching the heavy events, dance competition, all while drinking a lotta beer, ale and scotch, purveyed by local pubs and Japan's own St. Andrews society. (I hope I win that bottle they were raffling off....)

Here is the gallery of photos I took:

    http://picasaweb.google.co.jp/drinka...andGames10608#

But here's a few of them hotlinked for your viewing pleasure. You can finally see me wearing a proper trad. kilt rather than my UK... (SW Nightstalker standard).

Me attempting to toss the caber....

I should have left it to the experts...

One of the locals entered in the solo piping competition:

    And the dancing competition...

Finally, members of the Tokyo Pipe Band...

All the rest of the photos are on the link at the top of this post.

    Cheers,

    JD

That's great. I was in japan a ;ittle over a year ago. Standing on a train platform in Osaka was a very tall Blond haired gaijin kilted formally (not sure what tartan- red was the predominate) with a young Japanese woman in kimono with a young girl- I am guessing they were married and attending a formal affair. Wondered if that might be you, but I see it was not. Great photos- I'll have to borrow one for the people at my dojo to see.

    Those were great photos JD.

You know it amazes me how other countries embrace Scotland's culture.

I recently went over for the New Hampshire games and on hearing the accent people were asking me how their games compared to ours back home, no contest I'd reply and they'd say, not as good eh?

On the contrary, apart from a few they're so much better and there's no snobbery, which really puts my nose out of joint over here!!

So well done to everyone all over the world for showing us how to do it properly.

Our RSCDS demo team went to Japan a few years ago. They are excellent dancers over there.

Great pictures! Thanks for taking us along.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear
