    I'm amazed at you people

on how you treat your kilts, I think some of you act as if is some sort of God, like -
    fishing in a kilt
    had dinner in a kilt
    hill walking in a kilt
have any of you had sex in a kilt, No don't answer that
To me I like my kilt it is part on my heritage and clan (Anderson) but that it, it's an article of clothing and nothing more, yes it sends out a statement “Hi look at me I'm not dressed like you” but that is all, I don't look at it any difference that a smart suit ect.
Or is it that most of you live in the US of A and you feel left out and away from Scotland and you put on an act more so than people that actual live in Scotland.

Easy tiger! I know you aren't really trying to start a major bust-up but the tone of your post does have that ring to it.

The "did this, did that" threads are just conversation. There is always the option of skipping over the posts you don't have an interest in.

No need to be disparaging to non-Scottish Kilt wearers, it only gets people's dander up and it's only an article of clothing after all...

    *** Indeed

I will continue to eat dinner in my kilt as the mood strikes me, and you, sir....may continue to do whatever it is you find acceptable to do whilst kilted.

As a Scot living in Scotland I would certainly have to disagree with you Richard that our American friends wear the kilt to put on an act. Just like myself I suspect our Trans-Atlantic cousins wear kilts out of pride for their Scottish heritage or simply because the kilt is a comfortable and practical garment for all men.

Richard, this is a group of people who share an interest. Its more than just looking or acting different. It involves culture, history and the practical aspects of indulging that interest, from wherever that interest may stem. There's a whole lot of discussion about craftsmanship, style and context, and its about the people who put forward a bit of living history that is alive and well in the modern world.

If this is not a particular interest that you share with this community, that does beg the question, why are you here exactly??? (serious question).

Richard, i am no expert, and i can only give you my perspective, which is the basis for why at 43 i am getting my first kilt. I think it comes down to perspective. I assume you have grown up in a culture where the kilt is common. Here in the USofA, many would agree that we are a conservative, homophobic culture where the kilt is viewed by the ignorant as a women's skirt. So there is hesitancy in wearing one in a public; a public who looks up to manly icons like John Wayne and Rambo. If you were to put yourself in our brogues, you might understand how empowering and/or thrilling it is to go against the norm and really express your pride in your heritage. That is just my perspective. Cheers~Matt

    Richard.

Whilst I do many things with my kilt that many, from wherever in the world, would cringe at and on that point I agree with you. However, I think even you will admit that many(most?) a kilt-wearing Scot does keep their kilt for special occasions. Not surprising when we consider the cost of the kilt and its attire and that is a feeling that anyone in the world will have when laying out their hard earned loot.

Where I do take issue with you, is that for me and many other Scots the kilt is more than just a piece of clothing, it does have deeper meanings. I do accept that those meanings pass you by and fair enough.

I think we have to accept that kilt wearers from all over the world wear the kilt for all sorts of reasons and yes one of those reasons is to show off. I can think of more than one Scot who has worn the kilt for that reason too, but in all honesty, I do get the impression from many on this website who do wear the kilt with the "standing out in the crowd" aspect very much to the fore.

As you probably know, I do have some difficulty with the kilt being worn outwith Scotland and how it is worn and if asked I have been known to venture a fairly shocking(to some) opinion from time to time, but reallistically its too late to do anything about it now, so what to do? Well we can take a dog in a manger attitude, or we can try to educate those that are interested enough to learn and many are, on this website. There is also plenty of space for those that are happy to go their own way and without being too crass, freedom of choice is being exercised here with a common and harmless interest and is an example that many in this world would love to have.
