Tassels on a sporran
I'm not a big fan of tassels hanging down the front of my sporan, aLthough all the sporrans I own have them in one form or another. I've been curious about them since I bought my first kilt. Can anyone tell me if they have ever had a function other than just decorative items?
On the one Turpin I own they do serve the purpose of drawing the mouth closed and tying it off as well as holding the flap down.

I'd be curious to know as well. I don't wear my sporran around the house often, but when I do the bouncing of the tassels drives the better half crazy. I actually just bought a great sporran from WPG that has none. I'm a fan!

Mine make a cool sound when I walk if my stride is just right.
No, I wouldn't consider that a "use" either.

Right or wrong, I take the tassels off my semi dress sporran if I want to dress it down a little.

Me too... It's like having your own personal drummer marching you from place to place, keeping rhythm with your stride.
(Wife likes it too, FWIW).

The ones that don't do anything are just 'decorative" but they represent the ones that used to serve a purpose, like flashes represent tied garters.
And they let you march to the sound of your own drummer....

I'm not a big fan of things that make noise without a purpose behind it. I still keep tassles on my sporrans but if they make noise they get sewn down with a few hidden stitches.
A lot of folks like the "drumming" when they walk. That's cool for them, but I walk with a bit of a limp so the drumming is a bit "off."

The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

To my opinion the "drumming" is extremely annoying. When I'm buying sporrans I buy them plain witout these nasty things or make sure that they are fastened below the flap so that I can cut them off as soon as I get the sporran.
An exception is the STWK nylon sporran. On this material the sound is reduced to someting bearable.
