What is Jonesing?
I appreciated the question about what is a "tank". What is the history and the use of the word "Jonesing" for us newbies? Thanks all.

Painful anticipation spiced with a good dollop of impatience.

Heroin addicts in early phases of withdrawal from their most recent dose of smack have an inordinately powerful obsessive painful anticipatory craving for their next dose, their next hit. It gnaws at their gut and drives them mentally crazy, enough to to silly and/or stupid things. They cannot sit or stand still, cannot take their mind off it, will do whatever it takes to get that next hit as soon as possible.
Now, imagine you are a kilt addict, and you just ordered your next kilt. You are now jonesing.
Welcome to my world. and that of nearly everybody else on this forum.

Goes to show there is always an answer deep in the virtual world of Xmarks. I'm learning all the time. Just figured out how to create an avatar! Thanks for the links and for the definitions. I have a second kilt on order and the definition is pretty much in play as I wait!

...I believe that's actually the true origin of the phrase "jones", more or less.

See this post for the more detailed answer that was provided back in 2005:

And again, directly from our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's).
"Jones", "to Jones", or "Jonesing". This is a term computer forums have taken from modern culture. I refers to 'needing a fix' or that anxious feeling you get when you are waiting for your new kilt to arrive.
If you have not found our FAQ's yet look up at the top of this or any other page of the forum and you will see a blue navigation bar. The FAQ's are the second from the left.
