Fat Man and the Kilt at my Waist
OK, so I知 a big boy, about 260lbs. In any case I知 not use to wearing pants/shorts/and now kilts around My belly button. I normally like to wear them around my waist where My belly hangs over, LOL.. Ok I知 not trying to be disgusting but what I知 considering is a big deal. I知 thinking about bringing my kilt into a seamstress and have them choke up on the kilt so I can wear it around my waist and not my belly button.
What痴 your advice? Has anyone done this? Prose and Cons?

Well, for one thing, it will affect how long it looks. The kilt would likely hang below your knees. And even if that was fixed I just don't think it would look good. But on the other hand.....kilting is to a big degree about comfort, so it's up to you. I just wouldn't do it myself.
It don't mean a thing, if you aint got that swing!!

A properly made tailored kilt (worn over your navel) will actually be sliming in appearance.
Sporran belt loops will also help create a slimmer appearance.

I'm 6'0" and weigh 260 lb as well. It has been my experience in wearing kilts daily as my normal attire for the last two years, that a traditional (or traditional) style kilt looks much better worn at the natural waist (in my case just below the rib cage and about 3" above the navel). This is particularly true for us big guys. It makes us look slimmer and takes away the belly hanging over a belt. I wear 24" long kilts this way and the bottom of the kilt hits me right at the top of the knee.
The only time that I where pants is when I ride my motorcycle. I've done profile checks with my riding pants on vs. wearing a kilt, and my stomach is much more obvious in the pants.
If you are wearing non-traditional style kilts such as the Utilikilt or Amerikilt, these are designed to be worn more at the waist level where you would wear a pair of jeans.
I hope this helps. I'm sure some other guys of size will have some helpful info for you.

I try whenever possible to get my customers who are "Gentlemen of Substance" to wear the kilt at Traditional Rise. It is surprising how slimming it is.
Check out the pictures of Big Mikey. He started out wearing kilts only at low rise and has not totally converted to high rise.

Wearing the kilt at the natural waist is the way to go it will look right wearing it at pant level just doesn't look the same, will it take some getting used to sure it will but you will look better for it. Take a look at the style threads

I am sure you will see some examples of what I mean.

And to give another opinion. My friend has a kilt made for his pants waist. It looks okay, he's 6'8", 350#. Rocky at USAKilts tried to talk him into normal waist but he would not be moved.

If you were to tailor a kilt to be worn at hip level, I'll just point out that Utilikilt adjusts the drop when making their "beer gut cut" models. Because the gut pushes the front of the kilt down, the front is cut shorter than the back to compensate, so that the overall effect is an even look front and back. :crap: Maybe someone can explain that better than I did.
Best regards,
Jake

Check the Freedom Kilt site for instructions on measuring for that particular kilt. The section on "SLOPE" is what you are looking for.
