"The History of Scotland" by James Browne

I have in my possession the eight volume set, The History of Scotland, Its Highlands, Regiments and Clans, written by James Browne, LL.D. It was published by Francis A Niccolls & Co. in 1908. Furthermore, it is the "Aberdeen Edition" of 1000 numbered and registered copies.

I am clearing out space in my library and am curious if anyone here knows anything about the value of these books, or might like to make me any offer. The set is in near-perfect condition.

On the other hand, as the book is in the public domain, it is now available on the web for free (for example Google Books), though some of the illustrations are hard to make out. This is the downside of free books on the web - keeping the old ones becomes a curiosity rather than providing special access to rare information. Sounds like a nice set, may I ask why you want to part with it? (I might be interested)

One seller on Alibris has Vol I of the limited edition priced at $125 here. Of course, "priced at" and "sold at" may be a different story, but this listing bodes well for your full set.

While the availability of books on the net is handy for research, there's nothing like actually holding a book and reading through its pages. Especially if it's a fine book, or a rare book. I haunt rare and used book stores and purchase things like that often.

Or maybe I'm just an old geezer who has not moved ahead.

I found a copy of "The Unpublished Poems of Robert Burns" in a used book store once and bought it on a lark for about 2 bucks. Turns out, it was all his naughty poems which explains why they weren't published!

I would love to have the set, but I couldn't afford it. I'm working on a first edition Dickens novel. And a new kilt. And new custom hose.

Quite a few actually available from $100 to $300, one set with a pretty low #. I'll send more info if you like. I like that kind of thing in my library, even if I don't get around to reading it all (unlikely). What are you thinking you need for the books?

Donating the set to a library/museum would enable its use by many. I have given a number of my Civil War books I no longer use to the library at the battlefield where I used to work, so researchers & genealogists may put them to good use.
