Introducing the New Dove Tartan
I've been working with Matt on a tartan for my surname of Dove. He's been informed by STA that there shouldn't be any problems with registration, so here is the unveiling:
The significance of the colors:
The grey stripe - dove grey
The white stripe - The symbolic purity of the Dove (yeah, I'm not sure I should claim that.)
The black - the name Dove in Scotland is said to possibly derive from dubh, or dark.
The green - to symbolize the common, rural background of the family.
The blue - to symbolize the family's military service in different generations.
The basic design is also based on the Black Watch tartan, although simplified, again to represent the military connection.
I've just made the final payment to complete the registration and weave the cloth. Once that's done, I'm going to let Matt make me one of his box pleats. Later, after I've seen the cloth "in the flesh" I'll probably get a full nine yarder and fly plaid.

Congratulations on your new tartan. I like it. The small black squares in proportion to the overall sett suggest to me the wall of a fine Scottish Castle with the dark squares representing the gun apertures to repel invaders.

That was all Matt's idea. I gave him the colors and he came up with the design. He gave me some options, but this is the one that jumped out at me.

Or to the "no-stripe" stripe?
Congratulations on this accomplishment, Dave.
