Lidl Supermarket Economy Kilts
I went to the local Lidl supermarket at 8.30am, there were 3 kilts left, all Black Watch, fortunately one was my size so I bought one at £24.99p, there were no accessories left and I was told queues had been forming since 6.30am.
The kilt is obviously made somewhere in the Far East and certainly should not be worn at any semi or formal events. I bought this one simply because I always wear a kilt at the Scotland football and rugby matches and from this point of view will be very functional indeed.
I believe the sale of cheap kilts and accessories at Lidl is no more than a publicity stunt with Burns Day in mind.
Certainly there is on sale in Lidl a hardback volume of all Burns poems for a bargain price of £2.99p

The thought of a grocery store chain doing something that promotes literature (and poetry and songs at that!) makes my day.

Wow!
I wasn't expecting this to be quite so popular!
I wonder if this was the experience of all the Lidl stores in Scotland?

Good show! I also wonder if this was the case all over Scotland.
If you run into a 44 waist, I'd be interested.

Hey if this becomes a trend we could very well be picking up our kilts, songs, and verse from the WAL-Martians

Might it be possible that if kilts are presented “in your face” in an ordinary (not specialty or costume or tourist or ethnic) retail setting, and as just another clothing choice, then men would buy them? And women would buy them for men?
But, will the men wear them? And where and when and how often?
Might they then seek out a higher grade of material and fit and tailoring for subsequent kilts?
Granted that this appears to have been a holiday novelty presentation, but I wonder if a good response might prompt retailers to stock kilts year round?

Apparently so.
Cut-price kilts fly off the shelves
A supermarket offering cut-price kilts ahead of Burns Night sold out of the items in just three hours.
Customers rushed to Lidl stores across Scotland to snap up the kilts, which went on sale today for £24.99.
In East Kilbride it took just 15 minutes for the traditional dress to sell out and by 11am, just three hours after opening, they had flown off the racks at all 82
stores.
Best regards,
Jake

I wonder when Wal-Mart's going to get in on the kilt market.

Lidl Economy Kilts
Last night after work I tried on the Lidl Black Watch kilt, I was really surprised by the weight of it and of the quality. Yesterday before I tried it on I thought it was just another cheap kilt similar to what is advertised on the internet but this was a heavyweight kilt with the correct number of pleats given it a touch of class.
Of course the real test will be when I wear it outside and walk about, only then can you really know how the kilt feels and looks. So I will be wearing it on Friday night at the local Burns Supper.
I said yesterday that perhaps it would only be for casual wear but I think you could risk it on a formal occassion, anyway the proof is in the wearing of it and walking about.
I'll post with my opinion after Friday
