Monterey (CA) Scottish Games
While inland California was enduring a heat wave, it was cool and overcast along the coast. The Monterey Games, now in their 40th year, still has a small and cozy feel. Held in a long, narrow valley a few mile inland, the grass and trees are lush even during the usually dry summer.

For X-Markers it was noticeable that there were hardly any kilts worn by "non-participants". Even Utilikilts were few in number. Several people stopped to complement my non-tartan R-kilt. Here's a toast to Robert on our birthday.

At least one of the dogs was kilted!

The Amazing Madalyne found a sash for herself in California tartan. Since the vendor had fashioned a rosette for her, she immediately demanded my cap badge as a brooch.

There were a fair number of clans in attendance.

Most unusual mascot has to be this. BFI is a disposal company. Is that a cucumber? A pickle?

Many dancers competing.

Yes, Virginia, there is a kilt inspector. And here he is with pen, ruler, and notebook dressing down the drum majors.

And the one with the amazingly straight pleats is leading the massed band.

Panache talks with Yaish during a break in the competition.

There was plenty of fine entertainment on the stage.

Panache chats (or perhaps conspires) with Scott, one of the vendors.

These fellows were definitely having the most fun of anyone there.

Part of the collection.

The gentleman is Sean Folsom, who has been mentioned here before. To see what all these instruments are, visit http://hotpipes.com

He makes it seem so effortless.

It was a good time. We'll be looking forward to it next year.

Hey WalkerK,
Great pics as usual. Couldn't see it that well before, what's the story with Panache's new cap badge? The vid was terrific too, I've seen Sean perform, his collection of pipes and related reed instruments is amazing.
Best regards,
Jake

"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Thanks for showing us these lovely pics. Looks like you had fine weather in a nice setting for your gathering. I really enjoyed the Uillean Pipes video.
