    Two-Tone Kilt

    Hi All,

Pittsburgh Kilt's two-tone kilt gave me an idea: a solid colored kilt with a tartan (PV) front apron. Do you guys and gals think this would look good or not?

I don't think tartan aprons would look so good on a solid kilt, but maybe tartan underpleats would look cool.

You could always ask Steven at UtiliKilts about this one, since we were talking about the idea two years ago. The front apron would have been removeable for the normal UtiliKilt appearance (if necessary). I did a "mock-up" some time ago, and still have it hanging in the closet. It actually works as long as the tartan is not a drastic change from the solid. For instance, a nice Hunting MacLeod looks great over a navy kilt. The biggest trick is to be sure that the pleat width and the apron width don't clash. A nice wide tartan apron can look pretty silly on a widely pleated (like UtiliKilts pleats) kilt. Do this with a Twenty-First Century Kilt and you have a wonderful alternative!

    Jimmy C,

Could you please post a photo of your "mock up."

The interchangeable apron sounds like another interesting idea. How would the apron be connected to the rest of the kilt?

With the metal working I am learning, I think an interesting kilt idea would be tartan in the back with a leather apron to protect my lap from dripping molten metal.

Just a dumb idea most likely.

Kilt Wilter: I don't find that's a half bad idea at all. I've gotten drawn into glasswork (not molten or blown, the predone stuff, but sculptures and etc...) and I'm afraid to slash a hole in my kilt, and would definitely go in for something like that. I think there are a lot of tradesmen out there who would buy into it.

Even just cotton duc in the back with the outer apron flap made of thick leather. Or covered in leather.

I thought it was a great idea... But wasn't sure how the more fashion minded folk and the kilt purists would take it.

Infact, I would be glad to pay some kilt maker around here to make one for me... **Looks around shrewdly.** Or you could give it to me for free for sharing such a great idea...

    Hmm.

Even simpler, fashion a leather apron that clips onto belt loops(for contemporary kilts) or is belted-regular or sporran style-(for beltloop free kilts)
