How to tie garter ties with castellated hone?
I've watched several of the videos about how to tie traditional garter ties. But in the videos the hose is always turned down over the garter.
I've seen photos(?) paintings(?) of garter ties tied in a bow. I'm not sure that's what I want but the knot doesn't seem complete or tidy doing it the way it is done in the videos. Perhaps that's because the wearer is relying on the hose top to cover the garter. There seem to be some indications that this was done differently on castellated hose.
Can anyone tell me how it is done on castellated hose?

Thank you. I've seen that. I even posted there. But it doesn't tell me how to tie it. It looks neater than the way that is demonstrated on YouTube however.

I would just sent Matt a PM, and maybe he can post up a video or pictures showing the whole process. Sorry, that's the best help I can be.

Edit: I sent a PM request off to Matt. I hope he'll shed more light on the topic.

I guess also as a side note, this thread could go in the Traditionally Made Kilts and How To Wear thread, as castellated hose are still correct for full evening wear. They may not be seen much, but they do pop-up from time to time.

Re: How to tie garter ties with castellated hone?
Often when I wear castellated hose I use the same simple knot I use to tie my garters when wearing hose with a turn down cuff.

The only difference in the above photo is that when I turned the ends of the knot over to tuck into the garter, I didn't pull them all the way through, leaving a little loop at the top, you can just see in the photo.
There are a couple of fancier ways to tie a garter knot, some of which require a much longer garter. I sometimes use one which starts off the same as the above, with wrapping the garter around the leg, but when you go to tie the knot you start by making a loop with one end, then wrapping the other around that and tying it off, leaving a decorative loop above the knot.
I'll have to get some pictures to show how it's done one of these days, but it may be a while...

Matt,
Thank you! That makes all the difference.
I, for one, would be interested in seeing other ways of tying them, though. Somewhere I saw a pair that looked like the knot was a bow yet the tassels hung down below the garter rather than sticking out to the side. It looked a little fancy but good for all of that.

There is a picture and a brief "how-to" in "So You're Going to Wear The Kilt", page 119 in the 2002 edition. If you don't have it, let me know and I'll scan it up for you tonight.

This seems to be some what of a mystery. There are several old garter knots by what people have said but there seems to be no instructions on how to tie them. I saw on here that Bob Martin did an article on the older knots but have yet to be able to find the article.

Thanks Logan...that might have been the one I saw.
I used to know how to tie a clove hitch (I was Boy Scout back in the day) but even if I could remember, I can see that the standard Traditional garter ties that you see for sale at the STM and so forth are too short. Maybe way too short.
Still and all, that might be next on my list.
