Darn it! I was thinking of a custom weave of this tartan by Dalgliesh, but the loom setup fee would likely cost more than cloth.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Add my vote to nightmare. I forget exactly HOW we did it recently, but we did a 5 yarder in it (no, no pics). It came out nice, but I remember it was a bear to get the center back as a mirror image on a 5 yarder. NOT looking forward to our next order in that one.

Well, we'll find out soon enough, how Scotweb/Balmoral chose to pleat the beast.
I just got word from Scotweb that my kilt has been dispatched one full month sooner than anticipated!
I will provide pleatage pics, when it arrives.

Aberdeen District - Pleasure or nightmare to pleat? - Very interesting solution...
Received my 5 yard Aberdeen casual this evening, and I have to say, it has a very interesting look to it! Given only 5 yards of fabric, and a 23-inch sett, we knew it wasn't going to be pleated to the sett. As it turns out, it wasn't exactly pleated to the stripe, either! I would describe it as "pleated to the first color, until we run out of stripes of that color... then pleat it to the next color, until we run out of that color...". Overall, it makes for a very interesting look!
I just pulled it from the shipping packaging, so it's not been steamed, pressed, or otherwise touched up, but here are a couple pics.
First, the front apron...
And the rear...

You'll note that while it is not pleated to the stripe or sett, there is a regular pattern in the pleating. The kiltmaker has essentially created a pattern to pleat to. This is just what Bob Martin says should be done in a kilt with an incredibly large tartan such as this, in his All About Your Kilt.

I would have to say "well done" It is certainly different but I do not see anything wrong with that. I like it.

Is this a book I should buy or a web log or what?

It is a book, published by Scotpress (in 2001 I believe) and available for purchase through the STM Giftshop, Unicorn Ltd, and probably other kilt-related shops, as well. Well worth a read, loads of information about kilts!
