Stillwater Heavyweight Length - Need Help (again)
Ok fellas,
I posed a question last week about which kilt to get for wearing to weddings, Sport Kilt or Stillwater. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=27107
Stillwater heavyweight in solid green was the clear winner. So I did some research here and it appeared to be the perfect choice for me. It showed up last night and I was so very excited, it’s my first “real” kilt (my other kilt is a Utilikilt original). So I put in on and it’s just way too long. I am 5’11” and from what I read that should not have been an issue. It seems to be about 2 – 3 inches too long. Is there an inexpensive and somewhat fast way I can get this fixed? Or should I just send it back and save up for a custom made one? As always any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can take it to a tailor and get it hemmed.
How high are you wearing it, and where does it "fall"?

In order to get it to fall just above my knees where I think it should. I have to wear the top about 3 - 3 1/2" above my belly button. When I slide the top down to where it should sit then it completly covers my knees and falls a inch or so below the bottom of my knee.

Yes, we really need to know this for the best response.
The other important dimension is the inseam. As this can vary greatly between someone 5'11" with a long torso and short legs like me and someone 5'11" with a short torso but long legs.
I'm 5'11" with a 30" and the 24" works great on me but I have a long torso. This means I can wear it higher on my waist without it encroaching on my ribs as much as someone with a shorter torso.
If it truly does not fit with it worn in the proper placement, the best would be to have it hemmed. If you like the color and the fit, I'd keep it. You just won't find a better kilt at that price point in wool so hemming is worth it.

hmmmm, that's quite a bit over. I'll let someone with more hemming experience answer. If it were just 1" I'd say hem it but 3", I don't know about that.
Are you wearing a vest to the wedding? If so you can wear the kilt high and cover it with the vest.

No vest. I was going to wear an argyle jacket and tie. I also thought about the hemming it. Just did not know what something like that cost and if it would look funny if it were hemmed.

I'm sure someone can advise on the best way to hem it. I don't think it's very expensive but there might be a method that is prefered (ie. cut the excess off so there's a smaller hem, or don't cut the excess off just roll it over and hem it or...)
I don't know anything about hemming as you can tell

You might try doing a search - I'm sure hemming kilts has come up before several times.
Good Luck.

Here's a thread from my lovely wife, The Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess, about how she hemmed a Stillwater Heavyweight:

Hope this is of some help.
