Best color tweed to go with kilt
Hi everyone,
I'm getting married in May and, of course, will be wearing a kilt. Haven't decided which yet, but the tartan will either be Gordon Modern (a WPG kilt) or Gordon Dress (from Locharron).
My groomsmen (also kilted) will be wearing waistcoats, and I will be wearing a waistcoat and tweed Argyll jacket. The question is, what color should it be? I want it to look good with my kilt, so I'm torn between gray, Lovat blue, and Lovat green.
Any advice? Photo evidence would also be appreciated.

They all could look pretty good, though I get the general feeling that my charcoal grey tweed jacket might look a little more "formal" for special occasions than my lovat blue one does. It's an investment though, so it might also be worth thinking about what you would want to be wearing in the future. Then again, I got married wearing a short sleeved Columbia shirt made for fishing the flats for bonefish, so what do I know?

In my opinion, a Lovat Blue would compliment a Gordon Modern nicely. I would not know anything about a dress tartan since I usually only see these worn by dancers.

Well, I already have a black Argyll with silver buttons, but the wedding is an outdoor morning wedding (so it's fairly casual). Also, nice to see another kilt enthusiast in Madison!

Might take the "safe" approach. What thinks the bride?

Beloitpiper,
First of all, congrats on getting married!
Have you give brown a thought? It'd look deadly great with your Gordon Dress, or Gordon Modern!
Good luck.

Haha, she says that I'm allowed to wear whatever I want as long as I don't look better than her. That might be difficult if I'm wearing a kilt...

Do you already own the Gordon Dress kilt? Do you mean the ordinary Gordon tartan with addition of white bands? If not, I myself would avoid that tartan, being that it was originally intended purely for female attire.
Red Gordon is IMHO a very handsome tartan, have you considered that? Also very lovely are the ordinary Gordon in Weathered/Reproduction colours, or Ancient colours.
Do you already own the What Price Glory Gordon kilt? If not, I myself would avoid that, due to the fabric being made in India. It looks, feels, and hangs completely differently than any UK-woven tartan would. Even lightweight 10oz or 11oz UK-woven tartan, considered too light for a man's kilt, looks and hangs far better than the heavy-yet-flimsy Indian-made tartan.
I ordered a WPG kilt a few years ago. When it came I was taken aback by the fabric. It was claimed to be heavy 22oz military fabric, but it was nothing of the sort. It had a strange silky waxy surface and was oddly flimsy and insubstantial. It looked like no UK-made tartan of any weight of any time-period either civilian or military. (I've owned and worn a number of actual military kilts over the years, I'm very familiar with their fabric.)
I boxed that kilt up and sent it right back.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of WPG and I have several things from them which are nice.
About tweed, here's what Prince Charles was seen wearing with his Gordon Modern kilt

This might be a reason to wear the Gordon Dress whatever it was originally intended for.
