Blue shirt with Navy argyll jacket?
Greetings.
I'm attending a Robbie Burns dinner next weekend. I was planning to wear a white dress shirt with my new navy blue argyll jacket and vest, with navy or black straight necktie. The kilt is Ramsay blue.
Alas, my shirt looks a little big - I must have lost some weight?!?!?
I would prefer to not have the "I borrowed this shirt from my dad for the prom" look. I don't have any other white shirts with French cuffs, so I was thinking of wearing one in a light, subtle blue.
Yes? No?
The dinner will be 95% rented kilts, so I don't think anyone will be offended or anything. But on the other hand, I want to look good.
I guess my concern is that a coloured shirt would make it look too casual.
Am I overthinking this?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Perhaps overthinking a bit.
It may help to ask yourself - If you were attending the same event wearing trousers, jacket and tie, and all the other guys are in jacket and tie, would you make the same choice?

Well met new member. Thank you for joining us. If you feel the subtle blue shirt will have the same formal appeal as the white, then I think you should wear it. The man makes the clothes (some times) by confidence of inner self that shows in outward bearing. All of our military (former and active) have a posture that is subtle and apparent. Let us know of your decision. Photos will be appreciated.

Just put all the pieces together as they might at a suits shop and stand back to take a look. The light blue might even be more appealing than the white.

Go with what you want. I don't see anything wrong with a shirt that is not white. Remember, fashion is not about following rules of what to wear or looking like everyone else, it's rough guidelines that can be adjusted to your personal taste. I personally avoid white when I can as colors like blue and gray fit me better.

My first thought is wondering if you are overdoing the blue a tad? Blue kilt , blue jacket, blue shirt, blue vest and possibly a blue tie, hmmmm I think if it were me, I might consider the white shirt as a contrast. You will of course, decide whatever you will.

Thanks for the input, everyone.
Jock's comment re: contrast has me wondering if the white shirt may give the outfit a little more punch to it.
I'll probably try both outfits in front of the wife and kids - they are quite good at giving brutally honest fashion advice.

You can get a white shirt at Walmart albeit without French cuffs for $10.
That would be my quick fix solution.
