buckle or slip-on?
Greetings,
When we put on the kilt, do most buckle and unbuckle it every time or slip it on/off and leave the straps buckles? What are the advantages/disadvantages?
Thanks,
Mariner

I thought this was going to be a shoe thread, but I have never heard of slipping a kilt off in the way you describe. Are you sure it fits correctly?
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I unbuckle it every time. I have never even thought about leaving it buckled and just slipping it off. To me one reason I love kilts is how the wrap around. It makes it so easy to "tuck in" shirts. Really I just put on the shirt then wrap the kilt around the shirt. If I left it buckled it would be no better than my pants.

Slipping it off unbuckled would be impossible on me. There is nearly 5 inches difference between my waist and hip measurements. Even if you are shaped like a cylinder, I would think that you'd want to undo the buckles before you put it on and take it off.

unbuckling is the only way for most as the hip measurement will be greater than the waist measurement.

For some of us in whom our waist measurements are only slightly greater (if at all) than our hip measurements it not only is possible but actually tends to occur more frequently than would be ideal. Unless it falls off on its own (which sometimes happens after I release my belt) i undo the straps each time, otherwise I fear that the waist may be stretched farther than I already am suffering with on a couple of marginally big kilts.

Assuming you are wearing a traditional kilt, slipping it off isn't a good idea as it places undue stress on the stitching as well as the straps. The fact that you can slip it off makes me wonder if (A) the kilt is too big for you, or you are wearing it properly? The kilt should be worn around the waist, not sagging below the hips.

my hips and waist differ by 1/2 ", so I could slip mine off, but not without at least loosening it.

I prefer to store my kilts with the straps unbuckled. In fact, that is Kathy Lare's recommendation for her kilts, so as avoid "unnecessary ridges" in the straps.

Or C, your waist measurement is larger than your hip measurement and you suck in your gut and slide it off.
