Build or buy my next one
Ok, here's the situation
Have the Following
Black Watch Economy Kilt from Celtic Croft (4th purchase)
St. Patricks Phillabeg, buckles and cheater pleats added with 'not enough flop' and no fell, but still pretty cool (3rd purchase)
Loch Ness Ultimate Kilt from Sport Kilt, close tie with black watch pattern for sexiest kilt in my inventory (2nd purchase)
and finally a, either, Royal hose of Stewart Red or Prince Charlie light weight (maybe 8 oz wool) from the folks at Kilts-n-stuff that I purchased from the Florida Renn Fest. (1st purchase)
Book, "The Art of Kiltmaking" (Celtic Croft)
Now for my next one, months from now...
Build it or Buy it
Want to do Wool this time, Good Wool, I have a few fabric stores to investigate in around me, and a REALLy Good Lady friend whose a real pro at sewing for advice?
Thoughts from the 'Illuminated Ones'?

Do a search on the DIY Forum. There are several members who have made their own. Barb's book, The Art of Kiltmaking is an invaluable guide. With a talented lady friend to advise you, I'd say GO FOR IT! MAKE YOUR OWN

Hmmm. The Captain Kirk in you shines. I Like.
Also, have to first run errands to estimate cost figures here, of course no shipping and 'other party building'...
Any other challenge?

I say if you're going to make your own kilt, practice with some cheaper wool... maybe some tartan you can get on eBay.

Definitely get Barb's book. Then try something using a fabric you like. Wool behaves differently than PolyViscose or 100% polyester, and they behave differently than Arcylic. Actually, wool is easier to work with than the synthetics! (much the same way leather is easier to work than naugahyde).
Just remember patience can be substituted for skill, and do not hesitate to rip out anything you feel is not done just right. My strongest caveat is: Don't set yourself a deadline for when it must be finished. That way lies disaster unless you are highly skilled in the work being done.
Good luck
