    Casual kilt question

I'm new to kilt wearing - I am planning to make a solid color X-kilt and I have some questions. Will it look Ok to wear the kilt with hiking boots and ankle socks for casual wear and with dress shoes and calf high socks for office wear?

what do you think? do you think it will look good? that's what counts, really.

this question has been asked alot in the forum, so much so that it is probably impossible to do a search and get succinct results. (i'm not implying there is any harm in asking.)

what i hear said alot is that if you are wearing an ankle high or lower shoe, then wear socks pulled up (hose actually, up over the calf). if you are wearing boots, the push the socks down to the top of the boot. for me in warm weather, i push the socks down regardless, and i often wear my kilts with no socks and sandals for warm weather.

SteveMark, Welcome. As fashionable office wear, as long as it looks presentable (not unduly wrinkled, nice creases in pleats) and the fabric seems to work (probably not a Carhartt style) then it should work well in the office. If the office is a suit and tie place then the fabric choice may be key. Dressing down a solid color should not be a problem at all.

Perhaps a key thing will be the people who see you in both styles with the same kilt. It can then send a mixed message: casual wear tends to get branded as such, so in some offices, starched khakis are too casual. This is a good reason to get more kilts!

When I was new to kilt wearing I studied photos of those who wore kilts and decided on a "look" that suited me.
Both of the options you have suggested sound fine.

Kilted Christian makes a very good and interesting point about people's perceptions. Good food for thought.

In the show us your pictures section you will find several threads of various ways the guys have coordinated their kilts into daily and formal wear.

Here's the Casual thread, have a look and see if any of the styles appeal to you and Welcome to the neighborhood

I don't know about the half calf socks with dress shoes. I would wear regular hose with dress shoes.

Other wise, Hiking boots with ankle socks are cool , if you are going for the casual look.

You've come to the right place for all your kilt advice. Welcome.

As others have suggested, view the various photo sections to see how the different looks come together. A solid color kilt is quite versitile. I'll be adding one to my collection one day.

One thing you might want to consider is the way your casual kilt will dress up for the office. A casual kilt is exactly that, casual. Many people wear them in dressier ways, but if you're really set on wearing and making a good impression in the office, then maybe a more traditionally fitted kilt would be the way to go.

    Good luck.

    my feelings are
if i'm in a wool blend formal kilt I have my flat shoes and kilt hose pulled up.
if i am in a more casual kilt like my new Usa kilt or my am-kilt then its lower
socks like a slouch and sneakers and it looks cool .

If its hot out, just sandals work for casual wear too.
