    Casual or Traditional?

OK, I will be buying my first kilt in the next couple of months. This is something I'm very serious about and would like a kilt that could possibly last me a lifetime. I have found this site, http://www.scottishclansman.com/Kilts.html, which has a casual($219), and a traditional($369). First of all is this a decent site to buy from, and from what I've seen in the past couple years of searching for a kilt(not seriously until now)this site has a very good price. The price difference isn't really that big and I'm just wondering if it is worth it to go for the Traditional or save a little and go Casual?

I think the main diffrence you will se with those is that one is 8 yard and the casual is 4 yard.
so the traditional will have a thicker fuller feel.
more pleats the whole bit. you will have to decide if you want that full (lots of material) kilt or a thiner one. I think eith (if made well) could last a life time. the question is how will you be wearing it. I have found in my limited wearing that the fuller of my kilts can sometimes be a pain in the ****, all the material and whatnot getting bunched up and all. but i do love it when i stand up and they all swing ever so nice.
So i think that you will have to decide what you will be wearing the kilt for sir.

    Jman,

Greetings from GMan and WELCOME You seemed to have jumped right in, and with a very good question. As far as traditional vs casual you can best answer that yourself with the question of what you intend to do with your kilt wearing first of all, is it to go to more formal affairs, or just hanging out with family and friends?

Speaking from experience if you go traditional first you will find out about the comfort they afford and you will want more, so the casual will be next in line, and then you will want more. It is a vicious circle that is just so fun to be on. If casual is first then again you will find the comfort and want something to go more formal.

Read a lot of the posts here in regards to the various kilt makers and their kilts. Check out the traditional kilt section and see what others have said. Read the article section here on the board, and you might want to check out Bear's site and his kilt comparison section. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask, because that is why we all gather here, to learn from each other.

    Again WELCOME.

That really depends on where and when will you be wearing your kilts. If you want to wear it to formal events, go for the more traditional 8 yard. But keep in mind that you will also need to buy a nice jacket.

If you are using it for any other way, go get the 4 yard casual. You will enjoy it. Get a nice sweater and a day wear sporran, you are go to go.

    Hi Jman!

I hate to be the bearer of bad knews, but scottishclansman.com isn't a very good business from what I've heard. I was considering ordering from them this spring until I heard some reviews about them. Here's the topic that was posted back then...

I know that our sponsor, The KiltStore has a good reputation and good turn-around time. They also give a 10% discount to XMarks members, of which you now are.

Either way, I hope that you find a quality kilt at a good price.

Thank you all for the advice and warm welcome.

I will likely not be wearing my kilt at formal events so I will probably go with the Casual for now and possibly get a Traditional later on down the road if I decide to wear one for a wedding, or something like that.

I was at the Scottish Rights Games & Gathering in Tulsa this past weekend and a guy there recommened the Scottishlion.com as a good site, but I will check out the site Rufus suggested. I was also finally able to track down the Clan I belong to so I know what Tartan to get. That was the one thing that was holding me back from getting a kilt the past couple years.

Jman, I've also heard a lot of really good things about the Scottish Lion. I was at a Celtic festival this weekend, and the nicest kilt in the whole place was bought from the Scottish Lion. It was a Gordon, pleated to the stripe, and it was incredible. The guy said it was kind of expensive, but it looked like it was worth every penny!

One more question: If I buy from the KiltStore how do I get the discount?

If you enter the site through the banner at the top of the page, I think it just atomatically figures it in. Graham would have a good idea of how it actually works. I know he's ordered from them using the discount.
