    Customizing Jackets

Again, being new I apologize if this belongs in a different section on the forum or has already been covered ad nauseum, but has anyone posted a list of reputable tailors in various cities who can convert a regular suit coat into a kilt jacket? I got a harris tweed coat on eBay and took it to a local taylor and he more or less butchered the jacket. He's supposedly fixing it now, but I thought a running list of reputable tailors in different cities might be a good resource. OR, this may already exist in the forum and I simply haven't located it yet. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

There are forum members who do this, but I have not seen a list of reliable tailors who do. In the end, a lot of alterations work depends on making clear to the worker just what you want done. If you are lucky enough to know a real tailor of the old school, you can speak to him or her in a kind of shorthand, but even then, you have to be certain that the two of you are thinking of the same thing. Good Luck and please let us now if you come out pleased enough to recommend your people.

My thinking may have been 'off' on this, but it was a Harris Tweed jacket manufactured by Jos Bank, so I figured I'd take it there since their tailor would know how to work on it. I even gave him a photocopy of the before and after picture from So You're Going to Wear the Kilt! – which shows a side-by-side of the before and after – and he initially thought I wanted the 2 sides of the jacket to be 2 different lengths. I probably should have taken this as a warning sign (I tried being charitable and chalking it up to his less than desirable command of the english language) but I figure worse case scenario they will guarantee their work since they made the jacket and all. The story continues...

I'm skillful with many things but sewing is not (nor likely to be) one of them any time soon
