Day Tweed to go With Modern Hunting Robetrson
Hi all,
I'm thinking about having a new tweed jacket and waistcoat for day wear made to go with my modern hunting Robertson. I already have a dark grey tweed Braemar jacket but I am now thinking about something a bit more day looking, as the dark grey has a semi-formal feel.
I have seen pictures of the Duke of Rothesay in his kilt with a day tweed jacket and straight cut waist coat, and think that looks well with the darker tartans (like Modern Hunting Robertson which have a Black Watch base). Im wondering what the knowledge of this forum would suggest

I have a brown/tan/black/cream houndstooth braemar that looks great with any tartan so that should work well for you. It is a harris tweed pattern but is hard to find online.

Hard to go wrong with any day tweed really. The black watch based tartans are easy to compliment. Lovat green or blue would be a slam dunk, but just about any tweed could work. If you were having one custom made, you could look for a neutral toned tweed that has some of the colours of the tartan subtly highlighted in it but honestly, you can let the tartan stand alone and pull your outfit together with your other accessories. For example, you can get just about any jacket you like and find hose or flashes that compliment it and look pretty pulled together.

You might be interested in something like this. I just received mine a few weeks ago, in the green, and it is delightful. Do be aware that it is cut exactly to the measurements you provide, and the vest is tailored with the adjustment strap already set to fully expanded (in other words, you can lose weight, but not gain it, if you expect the vest to accommodate any weight fluctuations.) The tweed used in these jackets is gorgeous, and rich in color.

I am not suggesting that you buy this jacket, though it might work for you to have it converted. I AM suggesting that this is a good fabric and color for almost any tartan. The silk fabric is lighter and works in a wider range of climates, assuming you aren't worried about keeping warm. The barleycorn tweed gives you some texture without adding a troublesome pattern. And the wheat-honey-whisky color tone is hard to beat:

I agree with Nathan. Also, I am rather partial to brown/tan based tweeds (thornproof, herringbone, check, windowpane, etc) and tend to think they go well with virtually any tartan in any colour scheme. A brown/tan based tweed against the overall dark tone of the Hunting Robertson tartan in the modern colours, would look very smart and contrast quite nicely.

This sounds similar to your lovely tweed jacket, Glen.
