"Doctoring up" a Sporran
So I've got an inexpensive sporran from SWK that I have been thinking about tinkering with. I bought some fake rabbit fur from Hobby Lobby, and i was thinking about cutting it to fit the main part of the sporran (not including the flap) to make it a little more distinguished. I very much want to get a brown leather embossed sporran (perhaps with some sort of Celtic dragon?), but will have to wait until the funds are permitting such activity. Until then, I wanted to hear from the rabble on what you guys think about this idea.
Has anyone ever dressed up a plain sporran in this way? I also thought about putting some kind of brooch over the snap button.
Waddya think?

Good luck!

I'm not so sure about the fake rabbit fur, but if it looks ok and not too fake... I have an SWK bunny sporran and I like it. I do notice that the fur around the edge of the sporran has been tucked under the side leather so that it doesn't hang loose passed the edge of the sporran. It kind of gives it a tideier look. Also there are three chain tassels with rolled up bunny fur at the end of each. There is no bunny on the top flap of the sporran and the snap is the same plain snap. I think that the snap would be easy to dress up as you are thinking. Good luck, and I hope it works as well as hope you get the sporran you are wanting.

Honestly for what you can buy a dress sporran for on ebay I would go that way. Granted their not a top quality item, but your defintely not going to get that dressing up a SWK sporran either.

Only thing I done was take the tassels off of the leather and hang them from small chain. I think I got the chain from an old pocket watch. Wish I had it here to take a pic but my buddy has it now.

Upgraded Rob Roy
I bought a very plain brown leather sporran on E-bay. It was handmade by a guy up in central PA. I always liked the look of the Freelander sporrans, so I got some deer antler from a friend of mine and added pieces to the draw-strings, etc. I wish I could post a picture of it, but don't have one right now. Good luck with yours, have you thought about a real rabbit pelt? They cant be that expensive, some of the faux furs just look funky. Maybe yours is better.
Respectfully,
David

Thanks for all of your feedback. I knew one of you had probably tried something along these lines. My rabbit fur is white, and I think it looks quite real!
My girlfriend likes my kiltedness better when I am not wearing the sporran. I think she would like it better, if it had a little more character. This is almost too girly for me to stomach, but I am considering how I really need a sporran for different occasions.
Whew.

Hi DireStraitsFan, I'm a little confused about what you're saying.

That's good, congratulations. I like bunny sporrans even for kind of casual if they aren't too fancy.

Never, never, never argue with your girlfrind. First, it isn't that she's right, it's that you are wrong. Tell her that she is right and that you are wrong, and you'll see what you can do.

This is what's confusing me. I don't understand what is "girly" about this. Does your girlfriend like the way you look without a sporran or is it just the bunny sporran? I don't know your look, but you could probably get away with just a brown and then a black sporran that are plain. I don't like to mix black and brown together, but some of the guys here go by the brown for informal day wear and black for formal. When in doubt, ask your GF if it looks alright and go with what she says above all.
Hope that helps.
* As I posted later, I was trying to joke about all of this. I should have stated this before, sorry.

Wow. First of all I completely disagree with you. If I always did what my girlfriend wanted me to do what would that make me? Surely not a man.
I'm a little confused as to what's confusing you.
It is simple. I was thinking of adding white bunny fur to my plain jain SWK sporran to give it some character. I wanted to know if anyone else had done so. As it turns out, someone had done. Question answered.
Next, I said I felt girly because wanting multiple sporrans for different occasions feels oddly similar to a girl's need to have multiple purses for different occasions. As I have never experienced this kind of fashionista cravings, it is odd and girly to me.
As an aside, my girlfriend is really not a fan of the sporran, but I think she would like it better if I had one with more character. She saw one at the TX Renfest that was brown leather with green embossed leaves on the front that she wanted me to get. I think it is not so much the idea of a sporran that she dislikes, but my sporran specifically that she does not like. I am not going to simply stop wearing the sporran because she does not like it. Where would I then put my keys and money?
And I do ask my girlfriend's opinion, but I am exceedingly capable of dressing myself. I was doing it long before she came along, and I managed fine.
