    Dress belt and Buckle?

Does anyone have a good source for a dress belt and buckle? I would have bought one from Steve at Oconee Leather but he needed to take some 'time out' and is not yet retaking orders.

Is there any alternative for dress wear than the "waist plate" buckle (probably not)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Dress belt and Buckle?

Bugpiper on ebay sells patent leather kilt belts that would look good with evening attire. He also sells an array of silver buckles - Ian Grant of Edinburgh has some very nice, hallmarked alternatives.

    Cheers,

Yes, Mark at Tyger Forge crafts wonderful buckles. I purchased one last year. http://www.tygerforge.com/belt_buckles.html

    Re: Dress belt and Buckle?

i got my belt and buckle from AS Campbell Kilts, pretty good deal, with the belt and buckle combo, or you can buy them separately.though they seem to size a bit odd, i ordered a medium belt and its 'almost' to big for me at a 32' waist i should've gotten a small. it secures with velcro and seems to hold pretty well.

    nice belt and buckle set

Yes, the alternative is to wear a waistcoat and no belt!

I've also seen quite a few people wearing no belt and no waistcoat. It seems to be acceptable, though I think it throws everything out of proportion.

As for belts themselves, I suppose what will be appropriate will depend on what exactly you mean by "dress".

    Re: Dress belt and Buckle?

I think a good 'dress' belt, that is, a belt worn with Highland evening attire, should most definitely be made of high-quality, smooth or grained, black leather - I don't like to see tooling of the leather, or any other kind of Celtic inspired design - belts for evening attire look best in their simplicity. The ornate aspect of the belt can be left for the buckle, and the buckle alone (sporran cantle will typically be more ornate for evening attire as well), if one so chooses. Of course, you don't have to necessarily wear a belt with your evening attire - it is certainly not mandatory!

I currently own a fully lined, 2 1/2" wide black patent leather kilt belt, with a matching black patent leather frog in order to accept a dirk. The black patent leather of the belt and dirk frog, also goes nicely with the black patent leather of my bar and buckle brogues. I have a plain sterling silver 2 1/2" buckle with a thistle motif surrounding all four edges - this matches my shoe buckles, which are the exact same design, only on a smaller scale. I like for the glittering silver, stone (cairngorm on the hilt of my dirk, matches the cairngorm on the hilt of my sgian dhubh), and most ornamentation to correspond and relate to oneanother with Highland evening dress - now day attire is completely different in my opinion, with one trying best not to match or relate Highland accessories to oneanother!

I seldom wear the belt and dirk, usually only for very special, formal occassions, and only if the mood strikes me. When I do, I usually wear it over my three-button waistcoat, or without the waistcoat. I have seen this done in Scotland both ways, and I think both versions are acceptable.

    Kind regards,
