ex-rental a good deal?
I am in Edinburgh for a few weeks and have come across a gently use ex-rental kilt at Nicholsons (St Kilda). It is a 16oz, 8 yard and appears to be in good condition. As a kilt newbie I just would like any thoughts as to if this a good deal at 120 GBP. Anything I should pay attention to when looking at ex-rentals? Has anyone bought any of their ex-rentals?

Nicholson's are good.
If it seems in good condition and has been cleaned since it was last worn then it sounds like a great deal.

Thanks for your thoughts. It has been cleaned, they will touch up the pleats, and will reposition one of the straps to give me a bit more flexibility as I lose a couple more pounds.

Only thing about ex-hires/rentals is I wonder why the owner is taking it out of circulation. If it truely is in good shape then why don't they continue to rent it out?
Maybe that's a question you could ask them. Guessing you'll get a pat answer.
Don't think there's anything wrong with examining the kilt, seam by seam, to be safe/sure there's not a rude surprise awaiting.
Betcha already did that though.

I have not yet purchased an ex-hire kilt, though I have in the past purchased ex-hire jackets and sporrans. The reason that I was given about why the items were being sold off was that the firm (Hector Rusell) in this case wanted to keep their standards up so every year they replaced the rental items. The Jacket I purchased as an ex-rental had never been worn and was hanging in the shop for a year. I have also been able to pick up a pair of ghillie brogues the same way. If I were to purchase an ex-hire kilt I would pay close attention to the fell.

I wore my ex-rental yesterday, of course at $25 I would have been mad not to buy it. For what is essentially $240 I would look very closely at the stitching, look for worn areas, and check the pleats as mentioned before. Things that you have probably already done. Simply asking why it's being taken out of circulation, as Riverkilt mentioned, is a good idea too.
