    First kilt advice/opinions

So the day has come, I'm going to get a kilt. I don't have a family tartan, that I have been able to find. I had thought about a dark khaki, then changed that to black, but I feel those come across as too "tactically'. I then decide maybe a "generic" tartan. What are the general opinions of the new world tartans, as I've heard them referred to as ? I've seen a USA tartan, Celtic nations, ect. My head is spinning and my motivation is loosing momentum.I'm trying to be as correct as possible without coming across as a poser. I don't expect anyone to tell me what to get, but figured I'd vent to those who will nod appreciatively at my dilemma.

Thank you and I return you to your regularly scheduled programming

There are more choices today than ever!

Setting aside the Scottish Clan tartans, in the world of Scottish tartans there are "district" tartans (named after a geographical region) and "fashion" tartans, which are tartans created just to look attractive, and don't have a clear connexion to a Clan, region, school, corporation, etc.

Very popular is Isle Of Skye. Also popular are tartans like Auld Lang Syne, Auld Scotland, Highland Granite, Hebridean Heather, and so forth.

At a recent Highland Games I saw a House Of Edgar pattern-book chock full of dozens of beautiful tartans I'd not seen before, here they are http://www.houseofedgar.com/acatalog/Hebridean.html

These tartans have no other purpose than to look good, and that they do.

Going outwith Scotland there are numerous National tartans (Ireland, USA, etc) and Irish County tartans and US State tartans.

Traditional wool kilts aren't necessarily tartan. There are "saffron" kilts and tweed kilts and so forth.

Find a tartan that you like and wear it with pride. Just know what it's called, because someone will ask.

To add to what OC Richard said, there are also tartans for the Army, Navy, Marines, AF, CG, as well as police and fire. There maybe local and state (US) tartans.

The last option would be just design your own.
