    fringed hem

I don't know where this question should go (moderators move this if it is necessary)...

I've seen several kilts with fringed hems. I don't really have any way to compare the quality to my tank but got to wondering if this is a common practice?

    Is there an historical precedent?

The fringed hem doesn't look all that bad to me and I was thinking about a Stillwater heavy for knocking around and fringing rather than hemming bottom edge (they're all too long for me.

I may be completely misunderstanding you, DWFII, but I think those are Bear Kilts and USA Kilts that you are talking about. I don't have one, but I have heard about the fringed bottoms.

*I know, I know, I talk too much. I took out the rest of the stuff on the Stillwaters. *

The fringe is how the fabric comes from the mill. That's the standard P/V version of the selvedge

I was skeptical of it at first but I really like the rustic look it brings to my casual kilt.

If you're talking about a trad kilt, it wouldn't be traditional to have a fringe at the bottom. A trad kilt is made with the selvedge at the bottom.

I have some of the Fraser and Kirkbright XMarks tartan remnant that has the damaged selvedge. I do not want to hem it. So, I will be making a kilt from it "with a fringe on the bottom" (apologies to Oscar Hammerstein).
