General size questions
Hi all
New to the forum and getting kilted up for an upcoming wedding. Could someone please advise me if they can on these queries?
1 For my Prince Charlie Jacket, I've seen some easy I should go a size up (Im 40" and quite broad shouldered). Anyone able to advise from experience?
2 And the same for ghillie brogues really - I'm size 8, but had seen some websites advise going up to size 9?
3 And finally - I've heard that lightweight jacket is a good investment - anyone able to advise on retailers?
Great site, and thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome from New Hampshire.
1. Usually a vendor will tell you if you have to size up for a jacket. I didn't but that 's just me.
2. I would never buy shoes without trying them on. I buy shoes on line but they are replacements for ones I already own so I know their fit.
3. I don't know where you are so not sure if a lightweight jacket is necessary. (I live in NH and don't really have a need for one.)
As you can see, I'm as helpful as you can get.

Thanks!
Cheers for the advice
Jacket wise, it'll be southern spain in July - so 40 degrees!
And shoe wise, fair enough - just based in London so not may suppliers so resigned to online shopping to get a good deal.
Thanks!

As a general rule of thumb, as kilt hose are normally a tad bulkier than normal hose it is wise to consider this. If your normal shoe size is, say, an 8 and is a snug, but comfortable fit, then consider going for half a size larger in shoe size for kilt attire. Unless you are going for "bespoke" footwear it is rarely going to be an exact fit, but a wee bit of extra space is a worthwhile consideration.

Unless you know the sizing of the particular company, don't buy shoes online. I've done it, and it didn't end well. I ordered 1/2 size larger than I normally wear, and they are too small!
Jackets have a bit more flexibility in sizing, but contact the vendor to learn how their jackets size. Have someone else measure you (or get measurements from an existing jacket that fits well), and give those measurements to the vendor, they will generally be able to give you the appropriate size.

If buying the items online then you should ask the seller to take exact measurements of the items you want to buy. Shoes will generally need to be bigger than normal due to the thicker kilt hose but also note they need to be a bit wider. You might also consider wearing just formal brogues instead of the Ghillie brogues.
Also for your kilt jacket, a Prince Charlie may not be the best choice and it may be better to look at an Argyle jacket instead, the Prince Charlie is a very formal jacket and for a day time wedding an Argyle would be a better choice.

As I understand it, they generally recommend sizing up the jacket to the next size because most people these days prefer to wear their jackets more loosely than they were originally intended. Highland style jackets, especially formal jackets, are a more traditional style that should be more form-fitting than the square, boxy, loose modern style Saxon jackets. In my humble opinion, it looks better to wear the actual size that fits your measurement.
