Heading back for another cruise
Hi all,
Amy and I got a bargain on a Disney cruise due to my military that we just couldn't pass up. It is an 8-day.
During the cruise we should have one formal and one semi-formal. For the formal I think I got it down. Have the Argyle back from the tailors (weight loss), got the hand tie bow tie, got the gillies, and the garters, all set.
On the semi, for those of you who have cruised kilted, would you think a waistcoat and tie would be enough or do you think it also needs a jacket?
Thanks,
Jim

Suit or Jacket are typical "semi-formal" on Disney, Carnival, etc., so I would say a jacket with the kilt.

We just returned from our Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Gem. I was hoping I would have my new vest I had ordered around the 1st of February before we went, but such was not the case, and as a result I didn't bother even bringing the kilt. One other fellow on the cruise (a MacDonald from Scotland) I saw with his on a few times. My vest was waiting for me when we got home. Looks like the first time I will wear it is in mid June at Scot Day at Fort Ticonderoga. I expect to be at the Campbell booth for a while at that event.
On the other hand, we had a great cruise - light seas, great weather and beautiful beaches!
Enjoy!

In your case I think the argyle jacket could be dressed up with a formal shirt and black tie, or dressed down to semi-formal with a regular shirt and long or bow tie.

I wore a dark grey Argyle on formal nights for my cruises with Royal Caribbean from UK, the other lads who also wore the kilt had Prince Charlie or Argyle. I did take my waistcoat but didn't feel comfortable wearing it.

I might add a Mae West, too; I understand they are available in both formal and casual styles, LOL!
I was a blue water US Navy sailor and I must say, that based on recent events, my confidence level concerning cruise ships is not particularly high.

Norwegian hasn't had any incidents. I believe that is Carnival yer thinking of. I guess their rates are way down!

Another cruise?
Can't complain, since we almost sailed together I've been on two cruises, and have two more scheduled.
I think the jacket for both formal and semi-formal. On a recent cruise to Bermuda I took my Argyll. Wore it with a vest and bow-tie for the formal night (no belt of course), and on the semi-formal night I wore it without the vest but with the belt and a long tie.
I had one of Turpin's (black) sporrans with the interchangeable flaps, wearing it with a tartan flap matching my kilt on the formal night, and with a plain flap (matching the sporran) for the semi-formal night.

While the cruise lines have their problems, the Navy seems to run into each other more often (unreps, changing formation, etc). On the other hand, dozens of cruise ships are out every day and have few problems. The cruise lines are very conscious of the safety of their passengers - and the loss of income if a ship can't sail, or, as Carnival is finding out, when people lack confidence in the product.
I'm a travel agent and I won't book Carnival or Costa (both owned by Carnival) unless the client really, really wants to go, which so far hasn't happened. Celebrity, Princess, Disney, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and others aren't having any problem getting passengers.

Gee Sir William, a travel agent eh? We did Norwegian out of NYC, a 9 night cruise down to the northern Caribbean, and have nothing but good things to say. One sit-down lunch, my wife had a somewhat cool grilled sandwich, and one night at a sit-down dinner, my steak looked good, but was half grizzle. Neither was much of a big deal because you could order another entree if you so desired, have desert, or head for the wonderful buffet they had running most of the time. The staff was great, and the service exceptional.
We are planning a Disney cruise with the entire family (three sons, one or two significant others, a daughter-in-law and our grandson) for 2015, which will be the year before our grandson starts school. Between now and then we're saving our pennies for the cruise.
