A horse of a different color...

So I realy love the military horsehair sporran (along with those cool spats) however when is is considered inapropriate/apropriate to wear these? When I was a wee cadet we were onlt issued with a plain brown unadorned military day sporran, more due to the expense and rarity of their horsehar cousins than anything esle. (Plus likey the fact that a full sized horsehair sporran on an undersized 16 year old would look outright hillarious). In any case I never got to wear them and we always wore the plain day sporran with the Kilt regardless of regular or full dress. In vintage photos of Highland soldiers, I see the Horsehair sporran worn with a wide variety of uniform combination from full dress to in field combat (up to WWI when the kilt apron made any type of sporran redundant) My take it if one wears spats, one wears the Horsehair in most situations. It would seem with regualar hose that the old horsie might be a tad overkill. Thoughts?

Welcome, from the Isle of Skye. There are lots of threads here regarding Horsehair Sporrans. Try this link to one which features a range of discussions and opinions about Full Dress Sporrans and Horsehair in particular.

    Welcome aboard, McRoy.

Orionson's link is a great place to start.

You'll find that the opinions on horsehair sporrans are about as mixed as the opinions on white hose- some folks love them in the right setting, others simply can't see them being worn.

I personally prefer long haired goat to horsehair, but think that either type of longer hair sporran is smashing in the right setting.

    You, know...

...when I first saw the title pop up, I thought it was about Eric the Green, but I obviously mis-read it. After all, he was a Norse of a different colour.

Rev'd Father Bill White: Mostly retired Parish Priest & former Elementary Headmaster. Lover of God, dogs, most people, joy, tradition, humour & clarity. Legion Padre, theologian, teacher, philosopher, linguist, encourager of hearts & souls & a firm believer in dignity, decency, & duty. A proud Canadian Sinclair with solid Welsh and other heritage.

Just to keep the hijack going ...who was Eric the Green? The brother of Eric the Red who founded Greenland by any chance, but then he would have needed to have had green hair.

Gibber gibber lost the plot completely now.

I suspect "Eric the Green" was less of a sailor? Lol. (so much for this thread) ;-)
