House of Edgar quality/service?
I'm unsure how 'correct' it is to ask here on the forum but has anyone had issues with, or have recommendtions for, the House of Edgar kilt material and manufacture?
It seems that it's not possible to have a fitting at their address (Perth, Scotland) for either kilt or jacket, and that one has to rely on their measurement chart for sizing, and a swatch of the material for the kilt cloth quality.

I have a kilt made in their 13oz MacLaren Ancient tartan that I am very happy with. The kilt was not made by them in their shop, so I can only comment on the material itself, but it makes me happy. I got a few swatches of MacLaren Ancient in this weight from a few mills, and this is the one I liked best based on sett size and color.

I can highly recommend their kilting material. I have two kilts made from it. Its very nice. They are one of the most used mills. Can't say about their jackets though. But my material was not purchased directly from them. It was purchased through another retailer.

I have the highest regards for their product. The best kilt I own came from there 10 or 12 years ago, and it looks like a new kilt today.

Absolutely Brilliant craftsmanship! My first kilt, a hand-sewn, 160z. Shaw Ancient is by far been my best investment. I searched high and low for the best Kilt Maker and finally decided on House of Edgar (aka: Tartan Kilts) because they made their own tartan material. I will always talk highly of their work.
btw- I sent in the measurements via the web and when it was completed and shipped to me a month ahead of schedule, it was a perfect fit!

My pipe band ordered 14 kilts from them at over $600 a pop. Prior to ordering, we looked at the catalog extensively. We picked a tartan -- Ramsay Blue -- and ordered a swatch. After taking a look at the swatch, we all agreed that this was the tartan for us. We got measured by a local tailor who had experience measuring for kilts. The measurements were written down and passed along to HOE. There were e-mails and phone calls. Everything was done and every precaution was taken to ensure that everything went smoothly.
When the kilts arrived, they were a different Ramsay Blue. What they sent clearly didn't match the swatch.
Only one of the 14 fit. The rest had to be altered. Three of those that required alteration needed such extensive alteration that it was cheaper to take the kilts to J. Higgins and have him match the tartan and just make new kilts.
Our pipe major and sergeant tried repeated e-mails, phone calls and even registered letters to resolve the numerous problems. Not one single reply.
We have spent the past year badmouthing House of Edgar to every pipe band we can find.
In short, they're great as long as you're still a prospective customer. Once they have your check, they could care less.
Edit: Yes, the thought that perhaps our measurements got mixed up with those from another order did come up. They're very busy, and sometimes mistakes happen. However, when the merchant makes the choice to not reply to a customer, it's hard for the customer to see if this was the case.

I have nothing but compliments for HOE and Tartankilts.com. I own three kilts made by them. The overall quality is great and the fabric is the equal of any of the other first tier mills.

Almost any kiltmaker can obtain HoE fabric, so being measured by the kiltmaker should be an option. Their fabric is highly rated: I have one kilt made from HoE 13 ounce tartan.
I have one of their ready-to-wear jackets, bought through another retailer, which is quite nice.

I posted my review of my HoE MacDonald of Glencoe Muted kilt in the General Kilt Talk section last night. Fabric is gorgeous and very smooth, albeit a bit wrinkled from shipping right now. I got 13oz because it is the only wt this particular tartan comes in, and although it wears and hangs okay, it is definitely not as substantial as 16oz material.
