Depends. If it was the duct-tape blanket kilt for rednecks, I'd definitely opt for the trousers.

I guess it would depend on how "less than ideal" it was.

Guess I'm not as hardkore kilt as I should be.

Or any respectable tailor on Jermyn Street in London, then I would have to go with the trousers.

I say that knowing that there are some (rare) situations that call for trousers. For instance, I'll be taking an EMT course and they require slacks as part of the uniform. Fortunately, it's only one day/week.
