    How do I wear 'em?

Well folks... my trip to Maine was lucrative. I managed to snag myself a much needed kilt pin and a pair of hose. The pin looked quite nice on the hand-made kilt I've been working on (it's not finished, but it is wearable).

The hose are what I need help with. When I tried on the hose, it seemed like there was way too much material. I had them pulled all the way on, but there seemed to be a lot of excess and I couldn't pull them up over my rather bulky calves. Without me sharing pics, can someone tell me what I might be doing wrong?

There should be extra material at the top of the hose, to allow for the rollover.

As far as getting them up over your calves, you are probably like some of us here with big ol' calves. I barely get most standard fit hose up over my calves and because they're stretched to do that, I barely get a turnover.

The only real solution is to get hose made for your bigger calves. This, however, is going to cost you. A good source is the Almost Unwearoutable Company, that makes great hose and will make the hose to your calf measurements. They're pricey, but they're good.

My calfs have always been large (along with my thighs). I end up getting hose in the 10-14 range and the initial pullup goes almost above my knee. I end up doing what amounts to a double fold up to get them down below the knee and still maintain the pattern at the top. And then I thank the people who make the velcro flashes as they are great at holding up the extra fold.

I occurs to me that there may be a market for hose top "falsies"...nicely rolled cuffs of hose material that would be pulled on first and then the regualr socks would be put on and tucked up under the false top....

....could be a reasonable solution for those guys with the big calfs...it seems like there's just not enough material for a nice rolled over cuff by the time their calfs have taken up most of the material of the sock. Perhaps the uneconomical solution is to sacrifice one pair to create the false tops.

Thanks for those links Caradoc. The "popcorn" hose top looks pretty good. I can *just barely* get my locharron cream-colored hose to turn over, but they're tight as a drum.
