How to pack a kilt for travelling?
I will be travelling to see some of my family in a few months and will be taking with me a kilt or 2. Is there anything that I can buy the help pack a kilt in a bag without getting a lot of creases?

I have heard of people rolling them inside a nylon hose (panty type not kilt type) before packing in their suit case. I just fold mine in half the long way with the pleats out (that's the way the pleats are used to bending)and lay it flat in my suit case between two other items to avoid any friction from the suitcase during travel. Seems to work great. Another thing I do if flying is to make sure any leakables in my shaving kit are in zip lock bags prior to leaving to avoid anything getting on the kilt, as cleaning one is not an easy task.
Enjoy your trip!

Last month I went to Boston with my Hamilton Grey 16oz pv, my SWK Economy wool Blackwatch, some shirts and a sweater. Hung them in the old Samsonite suit type hanger that folds in the middle. I made sure it the kilts was hung nicely and sandwiched between some shirts and the sweater, this helped keep it from creasing any. It all folded together nicely and I secured it well with straps. Checked it in and had no issues in Boston or after flying back to Missouri. I think if you take the time to hang it well in one of these type hangers along with other clothes it will travel just fine.

I've used the roll-up and fold-over methods, and both work well. I suggest taking your hangers with you, so when you reach your destination, you can re-hang the kilts to "air-out" the pleats...any minor wrinkles can be removed by hanging them in the bathroom while you take a hot shower.
If you have an expensive kilt, you may consider hand carrying it on the plane (if you are flying). I've used a regular zippered cloth suit bag with the small slit in the top for the hanger. Just remove the kilt pin and leave it with the sgian dubh in your checked baggage to avoid any hassle with the TSA.

I use a nylon Totes "duffle" bag with a side zipper, handles, and shoulder strap, for packing my kilt(s). The bag is the same length as my kilts and generally what I've found is that the kilt(s) travel best if placed on top of everything else in the bag. Because soft luggage is porous I place my kilt in one of those plastic bags from the dry cleaners prior to packing in order to prevent it from accidentally getting wet.

You don't mention where you live, where you're visiting, or how you're getting there....we can give more focused information knowing that.
When I drive I just leave my kilts on their hangers and cover them with inexpensive garment bags from the big box stores. Put them on top of the luggage in the back - flat. Hang them up in the closet of the motel or home I'm staying at. Easy.
When I fly I wear the bulkiest kilt so don't have to pack it and fly in comfort. For the kilts I pack I use the Utilikilts four way fold deal...at least I think its theirs. With the kilt hanging fold it in half then fold the bottom up so its square and pack it in the suitcase. How many I can pack depends upon whether its a wool kilt or a PV kilt.
Order of the Gael has a kilt packing rig. I think USA Kilts used to - but didn't see it listed last time I looked. Just ask Rocky.
It ain't rocket science - particularly if you're able to take a portable steamer along to touch up once you arrive.

Wear it or roll it in that order of preference.

Ah...found it...thought that it might be lost...one of the advantages of having been around here as long as I have is that you remember old threads...this one was from Pour One Malt...anybody else remember him?

When I fly I wear a 16oz since it wrinkles the least. I pack the PV, flat in my large suitcase with my sgian collection since it wrinkles the most. Since you are checking that suitcase size should not be to much of an issue.

What if one want to pack a kilt in a backpack? (I really don't want much extra weight.)
