    I have a Question

Wearing my SW Irish National I have noticed that my apron edge likes to lay under my first pleat. Is this natural or am I doing something wrong in putting it on.

When I put it on I have to put the straps on the tightest holes as I have gone back on the diet and I am between sizes.

    Any help would be great!

Ive noticed that on my own as well.
Lost a ton of weight during the hot summer and im down to the tightest holes on a size 36.
Makes me wish I had gotten a 34,but winter and the holidays are coming and i'm sure the kilt will shrink again, and the apron problem will be solved.

Ah that second strap! Could be the problem.
I removed it completely on one of my favorite SK's and it hangs a lot better.
I read somewhere that the second lower strap was originally added for Highland dancers and really has no purpose other than modesty.

Just noticed that we are somewhat neighbors.
I'm down at the lakes now and then.Have a daughter that lives at Murray.
Perhaps we might by chance cross paths some day.

If you are into serious weight loss, might I suggest investing in a pair of clip-on braces (suspenders to Yanks) until you stabilize? Then see about making the kilt a bit smaller. If too much has to come out, then best put it on our sell it division, or eBay, and apply that to another smaller size kilt.

BTW I have heard several comments over time about purchasers having a problem with SK when their waists are at the break point in size. I have never owned one, so I am not sure how to go about adding or subtracting from one.

    Good luck

ah ha.........good to know that somebody knows the difference between braces and suspenders......I prefer the braces with the loops to attach to the buttons on my trousers........But then I guess it is a NC thing....lol

Ah, that dreaded strap. It has more disadvantages than advantages. The strap was origianlly used on military kilts. Because of the large rise, ~4", they used two straps, one at the waist and one near the top of the kilt. As the rise fell (oxymoron?) the second belt and buckle was not needed. Some like the looks of the second belt so it was put at the hips.

    .
Now, I have not made any kilts with the second belt and don't recommend them. They pull the apron when sitting, stretch the pleats where there is no canvas, doesn't allow the apron to hang properly...

It sounds like the kilt is a little big for you. The optimum place for the apron edge is equal to the first pleat. As you shrink your waist and hips, the apron needs to overlap the pleats. To alleviate the problem you can narrow the aprons. You would want to narrow both sides of the underapron and apron. OR, you can put on more weight.

This a normal 'problem'. I've owned quite a few 'tanks' and have had this problem on at least two of them (one only had two waist straps). Both these kilts were worn at their tightest fit. You just have to keep 'flicking' the apron out.

This problem indicates a kilt that's too big, or has too many pleats. If the latter is the case the pleats will extend past the edge of the apron. With a tank, having it rebuilt might be worth it, but with an inexpensive kilt I'd just wear it as is. If the problem becomes really annoying, you might sew down the pleats that extend under the front apron. This is a quick-and-dirty solution, but works well enough.
