Kilt and accessories for competeing in the Highland Games

Hi, my name is Mike. I've recently signed up to compete in the Highland Games and now I need to figure out what I need to wear.

I know I need a Kilt, but where can i get one that will be well suited for the Games? Also what other accessories do I need? Boots?

First, welcome. Now. I'm not a heavy athlete so I'm not sure what you want for OTHER gear but for a kilt, check Stillwater Kilts. They advertise here on the forum and have some very affordable kilts that should be just fine for competing.

At the games I've been at almost everyone was wearing different things - the constant (generally) is kilt, hose & belt. In addition - polo, rugby, t-shirts or sweatshirts. Shoes have been athletic shoes, high tops, boots and even brogues. I even think some of the clan groups have worn matching shirts.

In short, wear what you will be comfortable competeing in and have a good time.

Make sure that you're wearing something under the kilt. I'm pretty sure that most, if not all, games associations have rules to avoid the athletes flashing the crowd.

    Well, flashing on accident anyhow.

    Mike,

Since it sounds like you just getting things put together...I might suggest checking out Sport Kilt (sportkilt.com) for a kilt that'll not break the bank , function in an athletic endeavor and be relatively easy to care for.

Also, choose the appropriate foot wear for what you'll be doing. It's an athletic event so take that into consideration. You may want to check out some of the heavy athletic sites and check the galleries to see what the heavy's are sporting. Try these for reference:

Depending on field conditions , choose your footwear wisely. Some of the guys I have thrown with wear turf shoes or cleats. I have worn boots also. It doesn't take long for conditions at the throwing area to get pretty sloppy if it has been raining. Again depending on weather conditions dress appropriately . I live in the deep south so a t-shirt is usually all I need, but I have thrown in a sweatshirt and jacket as well. Some games require kilt hose , others are are more casual. You will find that almost all athletes wear shorts of some sort under the kilt. The spinning tends to reveal more than usual and you want to be covered. Be aware that you may be in the sun all day , so wear a good hat. I have a Columbia boonie hat that keeps the sun off , and also sheds rain in the event of a shower. Pack some sun screen and bugspray too.
    I hope this helps,
    John

I'm looking at SportKilts... but I'm a size 38-40. That puts me at the high end of LARGE and bottom end of XLARGE. Should I go bigger with a belt?

As for shoes, my buddy wears Cleats and told me to do the same. I'll look into Hose as well. I know my wife is freaking about the price of the Kilt right now (since I also just lost my handmade Celtic Wedding ring).

For shirts... We where the Scottish Heavy Weights Shirt provided for the games.

Look at photos from Heavy games, see what others are wearing.
Google scottish heavy games, highland heavy games and check the images option.

I already checked on that just before I got your post. Cleats seem to be the shoe of choice, and I have a pair of those. Sportkilt XL is what i will buy for a kilt and I'll get some hose as well. Shirt is already taken care of because of the official T-shirt that they give us.
