    Kilt compliant winter jacket

Ok, as you are probably aware of the winter is very cold here in Finland. So, I need a cheap winter jacket to wear with the kilt. I have many jackets but they are all too long and I can't modify them to fit with the kilt. So if you have any ideas for an inexpensive winter jacket to wear with the kilt, please help me and tell where to buy one. It could be very casual because I'm gonna wear it casually anyway...

And one thing... I won't wear a bomber jacket...

There are two threads going on this subject and what I can't figure our is why you are all worried about the length of a jacket. Do you worry about the length of a jacket with pants? Just wear what keeps you warm and worry about what you are wearing under the jacket for looks. Just my 2 cents.

Ok, i saw the one post in General talk too late. And what I am trying to get now is a jacket that also looks good with a kilt. If you don't want to help but criticise me for wanting a kilt compliant jacket, feel free to do it somewhere else.

And I was actually searching the forum for threads about winter jackets but because english is not my native language I wrote it "winterjacket" because it is how we do it in finland... "Talvitakki" in Finnish by the way ;) Didn't find anything with it so I made a new thread.

Now, I check the other thread too but if you have any ideas for me, I hope you stick in the topic.

And Chef, maybe I should change back to trousers so I don't have to worry anymore...

Please admins, could you please delete this thread because of double posting...

We always seem to fall back on military wear:

    http://www.flyingtigerssurplus.com/c...xt-1.html#4863

...just the page from a local surplus store that handles these parkas...I'd assume that you can find them somewhere over ther in Europe...I don't know if you can find them through any of the stores connected with US bases but it might be possible.

The down jacket that I've been using is discontinued, apparently...it was something between these two:

    and:

    http://www.landsend.com/cd/fp/prod/0...20785837176091

It does get cold here in Chicago and I've been known to swear the down jacket with just a t-shirt underneath...it's that warm.

Again, there must be a corresponding brand available in Europe. With the Euro so strong against the dollar, it might be cost effective just to order one from here but I expect that the shipping could be a deal killer there.

    Hope it helps.

    Best

And sorry for everyone if I have been a little grumpy in posts today. Been a bad day. First I broke up with my girlfriend and then my car broke up... Had to walk home in the blizzard...

Ouch!... I'd be grumpy too if that happenned. I guess the lesson here is - never break up with your girl in bad weather if your car needs maintenance.

Anyway... I was wondering if there was a particular reason why you won't wear a bomber jacket? (Typically, that's the only style of jacket I wear with kilts in the winter.) She get's plenty cold here in Ontario as well!

    Just curious.

And good luck with your search.

My ex used to (well, I guess he still does) wear a winter coat that I think would be perfect for kilts. It was heavy navy wool, double-breasted, brass buttons, cut like a pea-coat, but cropped at the waist, with a waist band. Sort of like this, only better:

I've been looking, but I've never seen one for sale anywhere. I know that's not much help, but if anyone sees one, do give me a holler.

    Regards,
    Rex.

I apologise for the way I came across. I am not critisizing you, what I am wondering is why there seems to be this idea that an outerwear jacket needs to be kilt specific. I can't see any reason that a jacket or coat that works with pants won't work with a kilt. I grew up wearing kilts and the most common jacket I saw was a Barbour waxed jacket and they looked just fine. It was also the Royal family's choice.

They also provide a certain amount of protection for the kilt itself. Which is a good thing since there is a lot of material in a kilt to get wet. For dress I like my inverness cape but before I had one my regular overcoat worked just fine. My point is that I think it is fine to wear a jacket or coat that works as opposed to limiting oneself to a short jacket like a bomber.

So if I was to make a suggestion it would be a Barbour Waxed Jacket with a lining for the cold.

I second the Barbour; I wear my Barbour with my kilt, and I know our Freelander does as well.

    Cheers,

Ok, I came up with this old Finnish Army jacket from late seventies on local "eBay". I don't know what the material is in english but they used to make all military winter jackets and navy jackets from it. Very durable and warm. I think I cut the lower part a little shorter leaving it a little longet from the back and sew some badges to it to make look more casual.... It's only 11 euros!
