Re: Kilt Hose(Socks)Question
I've never heard the term "Clocked Kilt Hose" before, could you provide some insight into that as I'm sure many of us are wondering what exactly you mean.

Re: Kilt Hose(Socks)Question
"clocked" socks/hose, is a term that is generally understood to mean a narrow vertical panel of either colour or decorative/cable type of stitches, usually on the sides rather than the front and back

Thanks Paul, I guess this is another example of being separated by a common language. I think they look wonderful in any colour you like.

Re: Kilt Hose(Socks)Question
MacMurdo/PaulHenry-Readers;
He is quite correct--clocked-- stockings/hose/ect/ are designes to the side of the hose, the rest of the hose colored and plain.
The re-enactor website, Jas. Towsends and Son sells them, for thoes who would like a PICTURE!
Thanks for the 'translation' PaulHenry- do they still sell clocked stockings in the UK? I have not seen them in the USA since the 1960's.

Here's the picture from Jas. Townsed.

I'm not a fan of the embroidery on these hose, but I am a fan of cables and other decorative stiches worked into the ankle area of kilt hose and stockings.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Re: Kilt Hose(Socks)Question
I could swear we had a discussion on this a few years ago.
I'm not aware of clocking being traditional for Scottish kilt hose, but from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I think it could work if done well. As I recall, it was originally done to help hide seams near the ankles. It could look a little odd, though, with only a small bit of clocking down low like that. But if it was a more decorative band that extended up a bit, it might look pretty good.
This was usually done on thin silk stockings, right? How would it look on thicker kilt hose?

Re: Kilt Hose(Socks)Question

Like these? w/ the vertical lace to break up all the ribbing?
Sock wt yarn.
pay no attn to the fit. I took them back from my dad, and a)shortened them, and b)reduced the number of stitches around. Hence, the little pieces of yarn hanging off the cuffs. He's just trying them on for fit, for the first time.
They fit much better, these days
