    Kilt pin

I just took delivery of my clan's kilt pin (pewter), and the pin on the back looks extremely fragile. Any advise on what's out there to upgrade and attach?

A local jeweler should be able to "beef-up" the fastening for you. There are several grades of fasteners available.

You don't say what type of attachment you have . However if it is a standard pin and clasp type you can keep it safe by:

    1. Passing the pin though the kilt
2.Then though a piece of pencil eraser and then back through the kin to fasten (You can also substitute a piece of rubber band )

This will stop you losing it if it opens while walking/Running/marching

I don't know the kind of clasp you have, but I've often used a quilting safetypin or even a regular one either to hold something on as a kilt pin or to give a little extra hold. The rubber band thing is a good idea to.

It's a very fragile pin which inserts into a clasp that turns, securing it.
Jay, thanks for the info, I will check it out.

    Greg,

Several folks have also modified their kilt pins to use rare earth magnets. Click the search link in the menu bar above, and paste in the word neodymium for several related threads.

All that's needed is a small stitch at the top and bottom of the pin as told to me by my kiltmaker.

One of my kilt pins is held magnetically, and has never moved, unless I changed the position. I got the magnetic clasp from a local trophy and engraving shop. They use them often for name tags. I was surprised at the strength of the magnets.

I like doing this better than the rubber band.

    pencil eraser
