    kilted pleat to alternanting stripes

    Hi Serial Kilters

When you decide to get a kilt pleated to the strip, would it be possible to get it pleated alternating between two or more stripes? Would the stripes on a particular tartan have to be equally spaced like in the case of MacEwan where the stripes/pivot points alternate on the green section only, or would it also work with a tartan like Mackenzie where there is more then one strip on more one section of the tartan?

Hi Paddy. Indeed it is possible. It isn't done often, I don't think. That said, the Canadian Scottish Regiment wears Stewart Hunting and alternate the stripes with the red and yellow. It is commonly referred to as "ketchup and mustard". MacEwan is very similar and could be pleated in the "ketchup and mustard" pattern, if you wished.

Thank you. It’s amazing that it’s from WWI. I’m glad to be the custodian of it for while.

I have one pleated to three colours - I might have a photo...
Yes - this is when the fabric was just roughly folded for the edge of the apron and left side, for reverse Kingussie style, as I was deciding on how best to arrange it, but I think you can get the idea.

Some Tartans like Stewart Hunting look good pleated alternating.

    And the X Marks Tartan.

And some - like this Wilson - not so good.

I have always suggested to a customer who is unsure, to have their kilt maker pleat up samples and send photographs via email. As in this pleating sample of Nova Scotia.

As pointed out above Hunting Stewart is a special case due to the red and yellow lines alternating across an otherwise symmetrical tartan.

Black Watch-based military kilts with one or more light overstripes are generally pleated to them, so that Gordon shows a yellow line on each pleat and Seaforth MacKenzie shows a white line on each pleat.

But on Hunting Stewart pleating to either the red or yellow means massively deep pleats and a vast amount of tartan being swallowed up in them, thus the alternating pleating to both the red and yellow lines.

On my Hunting Stewart (weathered) kilt I decided to have the pleats alternate between a brown line in the grey area and a brown line in the black area, which creates an impression of half as many pleats as there actually are.
