Lightweight Kilt Advice/Recommendatons
Greetings all,
I am shopping around for a 5-yard, casual kilt and although I feel as though I've done a good bit of research, I still have a couple of questions. Hoping y'all could help me out.
My primary goal is that this kilt ride lower down than the natural waist, more like where a pair of pants would sit. Shorter rise, narrower belt. The only one I've found that's clearly advertised as such is by Dalgliesh. Any others that I should consider?
Also, should I avoid 10 - 11oz fabric? That seems to be the general consensus around the web.
I await your reasoned responses veritably pregnant with anticipation!

As I have been mentioned I guess it is safe to toot my own horn a bit. I do make kilts that can be worn lower than the traditional Full Rise. I am one of the few kiltmakers that designs a kilt from the start to be worn where the customer wants.
I don't just make the kilt shorter.
As you are asking for advice I would advise against short yardage kilts and avoid very light weight fabrics. They just don't look as good. Short yardage kilts were actually started as a short cut response to the inexpensive imports.
But if cost is the major factor in your decision, and you want a lower rise kilt, then you are left with very few options.
I'm sorry but I don't take short-cuts in quality or fabric when I make a kilt and the lightest weight fabric I handle is a 12oz Synthetic.
If however you want a kilt that will fit you, where you want, perfectly, will hang and swish the way you expect, and will last a lifetime, then the first thing to do is send me an email.

I like my USA Casuals and I wear them on my hip bone points ( a little lower the jeans level ). I oversize the hip dimension when I order so the taper from hip to waist includes an extra tapered pleat on each side of the rear.
I am actually 34 waist and 36 hip. I order 34 waist and 39 hip. This takes into account the more rapid dimension change required by the shorter vertical distance between my waist and hip.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

I own a low-waisted "casual" from Scotweb, that is made by Balmoral. Mine is made from heavyweight 16oz Lochcarron fabric. I really like the fit, and with less yardage it is considerably lighter in heft than my heavyweight 8yd kilts.
This is that casual kilt, in Aberdeen District...

I have an 5 yard 10oz kilt and it certainly does not hang and look as good as an 8 yard 16oz one, but it is very nice to wear on a hot day but it is not at all wind-tolerant.

I’m very happy with my USA Casual which I’ll wear on the hips. I bought it on eBay and it is to the short side, even worn that low. But it is a great kilt which definitely keeps its pleats.

USA Kilt casual, American Heritage tartan, Marton Mills PV, belt loops for a normal belt. Perfect on a hot day

Many thanks to all who responded! Order placed with USAKilts this morning with apologies to the "runners up."
1. Discount on American Heritage tartan: the wife and I get by alright but a deal's a deal!
2. More "thumbs up" on this thread (by a hair).
Pic's to follow in a couple of months!
Warmest Regards,
Hix
