Looking to Buy
Hi all,
going through several threads I have narrowed down to a few makers and am leaning towards Stillwater.
This will be more than likely my 1st and last purchase, wife and i are renewing our vows next Jan. .... ok ok i knew what a few of you are thinking... anyhoo, price is a concern and the Standard looks reasonable for me.
Is there any advice on shipping, accessories or anything else for that matter, I should be paying attention to.

First from NH
SWK service is so good that your kilt is probably in the mailbox now
I own three and I'm very satisfied with them.

Oor Wullie - that name's a blast from the past!
Part of what drove me to go kilted was the idea of renewing our vows, too. I'd always wanted to get married in a kilt but circumstances didn't allow it. Like you, I found XMTS and things kind of snowballed from there. So now, 6 weeks or so after buying my 'first and only' kilt, my second is on its merry way to me (both Stillwaters, one a Nightstalker, the new one a Black Shadow). So although my own experience lies with Stillwater and nobody else, I'd say that you really can't find a better 'first' kilt or kilted experience for that matter.
I'm sure you'll have already seen from the threads posted here that Jerry's service is second-to-none and it's unlikely that you'll find a better kilt for the price. Once you start your addiction (and you will), there's plenty of advice to be had in here on the other options and kilts (and makers) available to you. You're also going to need a sporran and hose at the very least.
In the meantime, Good Luck, congratulations on your forthcoming Renewals and of course

I understand that the shipping to Canada takes a little bit longer than the light-speed shipping that we enjoy here in the U.S. I'm sure that one of our Canadian members can comment on that.
As far as accessories, think about a kilt belt, a sporran and a kilt pin at the minimum. The next thing to consider is a pair of kilt hose...
...and if you've read enough of the posts here, you know that after that you're hooked and the Argyll Jacket, the commando sweater, the Prince Charlie Jacket, the dress sporran and the ghillie brogues are next followed in short order by another kilt...you're on a slippery slope here, my friend...be careful!
I sure hope that you're renewing your vows with a very understanding wife. Potato chips and kilts have something in common...you can't stop with just one!
Seriously, welcome aboard. The Stillwater is a good choice as a first kilt and I'm sure that you'll look sharp in it. The suggestion about the belt, sporran and pin stands but in the spirit of the day (April 1), the rest is just kidding...
...or is it?
Best

First of all welcome to the rabble, I own two stillwater kilts, a standard and an economy, you would be hard pressed to find a better first kilt. Since you are renewing your vows you might want to think about dressing it up. Nice sporran, nice belt and buckle, wingtips if not into ghillie brouges, kilt hose and flashes. Keep checking the post here and you soon learn where to get all of these at reasonable prices. The addiction has begun.

Oor wullie,
See may avatar for the get up I use for church, it is a Stillwater in Irish National with matching flashes and necktie. I haven't gotten the vest and jacket yet..... But that is next. The Stillwater Standard is a great first kilt. Then a USAK, then a Wool Tank, then ...... Almost as addictive as genealogy!

Let me know if you want to see a Stillwater kilt in person. I have a standard Black Stewart and a heavy weight in Black Shadow Tartan. I also have 2 bear kilts that you can check out as well.
