Looking for tartan and kilt advice for my wedding
Howdy!
I'm getting hitched in September and am looking for some advice on a universal tartan that will go with my bride to be's dress. She's going with an Indian look, with some modifications for modesty. Here's the base dress that she's starting with, basically making the choli long enough to cover her midriff and with fuller sleeves.
In addition, any advice on what I should be wearing would be much appreciated. I have a USAK 5 yard wool in Texas Bluebonnet, but since the weather in September tends to be a little warm, I'm not sure wool is the best choice. Plus the tartan is primarily blue and probably won't go too well with all that red.
Thanks in advance!
Pat

How about a grey on grey fashion tartan? No worries about color matching.

Agreed on the Grey. The Hamilton Grey is nice and you can match her color with kilt hose and other accessories. I like the grey for the versatility and creativity. Here is one of me in Hamilton Grey and burgundy kilt hose and sweater. Though casual it shows what you can do to accent it.

I would not be afraid of clashing with the bride if you wear a colorful kilt. In the pictures I've seen of Indian weddings, the groom and other men were wearing colorful clothing, too. Blue does not clash with red, but ask the bride, and perhaps some older members of her family; wearing grey or another dull color to a wedding might be considered insulting.. You're blending traditions, so why play down the kilt. Besides, if she wears a dress anything like the one in the picture, she will be the center of attention, no matter what you wear.

Is this the time to suggest a tweed?
There are many tartans that would work perfectly, but a tweed might be the best understated bit of elegance for your wedding.
My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Hi!
I know this thread's a little old, but we've got an update. The dress came in and we started a tartan thunderdome. We're down to the point where two tartans will enter thunderdome but only one will leave. Thanks to Rocky, I've got swatches. So please take a look at the pic and let me know which one you think goes better. I know which way I'm leaning, but I'd really appreciate the rabble's feedback.

I like the one on the right.
Pardon my cultural insensitivity, but the jacket I think of as a "Nehru" is both Indian and very much like many standard style dress doublets. Would you consider a culturally blended tunic in the same fabric (unembroidered) as her dress, perhaps with blue piping? The fabric would make it Indian, the cut could be more Scottish. How you chopped it off would determine how far off the bubble you would go each way. Her supplier shows several kurtas and Indo-western suits that look to me like they might be adapted into a stunning wedding tunic for wear with the kilt.
